The Conair Serene Sound Therapy machine is small, inexpensive and simple to use. It is not as fancy and doesn't boast as many features as the best sound machines in our lineup, but it is an inexpensive way to lull yourself to sleep at night.

The sleep machine boasts an all-white exterior with a gray ring around the center speaker. It is relatively small at 6.5 inches wide, but it weighs 2.5 pounds, which is heavier than the majority of the sound machine models we reviewed. There are only three buttons on the entire machine: a volume dial, a sound selector and a timer. The simple layout makes this sound machine easy to operate right out of the box.

This is the only sound generator we reviewed that operates solely on battery power. While this makes the sound machine more portable than other machines, it causes an inconvenience, as you have to replace the AAA batteries when they drain. All the other sound machines we evaluated come with an AC adapter or USB charger.

It is uncommon to find a sound generator to lack a white noise setting. This is the only sound machine we reviewed that doesn't have one. White noise can block or mask unruly noise, whether you are in the office or trying to sleep. Although there isn't a white noise sound, this sound machine comes with six sleep sounds: summer rain, rainfall, ocean waves, babbling brook, heartbeat and tropical rainforest. Most other sound machines we reviewed have more sounds to choose from.

You switch between the sounds with a touch of a button, and the sound lights up when selected. You can set a timer for your sound machine to automatically turn off after 15, 30 or 60 minutes of runtime. There is a one-year warranty on this sound machine should you experience any problems.

There is nothing overly fancy about this sound machine, but its simplicity and ease of operation are its main selling points. It comes with six sounds but does not have a white noise setting. It is battery-powered and small enough to easily move from room to room. The Serene Sound Therapy machine is an inexpensive solution for better sleep at night.
