WinAVI is perfectly respectable video converter software, but we don't think respectable is quite enough to justify its price tag. When we compare the best video converter software, other applications convert much longer lists of file formats and include cool extras like 3D conversion capabilities. WinAVI converts to and from basic file formats but not much more.

This product is quite fast, and we like that, but it lacks luster in most major categories. There are very few ways to manipulate your videos as part of the conversion process. Competitors' software often allows you to add transitions, flip, clip, add a watermark to your videos and much more. WinAVI is mostly involved with the basic conversion process rather than personalizing videos.

The options for conversion are solid, though. You can change the screen dimensions, frame rate and audio bitrate, and burn converted files to DVDs. You can also take advantage of the batch conversion and VCD/SVCD/DVD burner options. However, this product cannot merge files or convert audio.

Most of the tests we performed were successful, with the exception of VOB files. No matter how hard we tried, we were unable to convert our VOB files.

This application does support AVI, Matroska files, ASF, RealMedia, QuickTime/MPEG-4, Flash, FLV and MPEG formats. The number of output formats is even smaller than the number of input formats. You can only convert your videos to RM, DVD, AVI and WMV formats. You can't even convert your videos to common file formats like MP4.The lack of file formats in this area is disappointing. We would definitely like to see some more file formats here.

We had few problems figuring out how to use WinAVI. There are some confusing aspects of its interface, but after spending a little bit of time getting used to the software, these quirks weren't an issue.

WinAVI includes a comprehensive built-in help manual that answered most of our questions, but more live help options would really add value to the product.

WinAVI Video Converter functions fine for most conversions, but we got used to seeing longer lists of compatible file formats and many more editing tools with similar products. This software has the nuts and bolts down pretty well, but it would need to add more features and file types to justify its price.
