PROS / Gateway costs are included in your monthly fee.
CONS / MerchantPlus has one of the highest per-transaction fees among the companies we reviewed.
VERDICT / MerchantPlus offers payment gateways and transparent interchange-plus pricing to help your business accept credit cards online.
MerchantPlus offers multiple gateway options that you can choose from when you set up your account to accept credit cards online. This online credit card processing company has two simple, transparent pricing plans: the Advanced plan and the Enterprise plan. For this review, we looked at the Advanced plan. It has a monthly fee that covers costs that many other credit card processing companies charge as separate fees. MerchantPlus has several options for payment gateways you can integrate with, including popular gateways, such as Authorize.net. You can also integrate with a variety of different eCommerce platforms and shopping cart software providers, including Magento, Shopify and Zen Cart.
MerchantPlus offers interchange-plus pricing to all of its merchants who use its service to process credit cards online. Interchange plus is the preferred pricing structure of the credit card processing industry, owing to its transparency. MerchantPlus charges its merchants an interchange-plus markup of 0.30 percent plus a $0.30 per-transaction fee. The 0.30 percent markup is average for the credit card processing companies in our review, but the per-transaction fee is one of the most expensive of those that offer interchange plus as a pricing option. With this in mind, MerchantPlus may be a good choice for businesses with a high average ticket size.
This processor charges a monthly fee of $30. This was among the most expensive monthly fees in our review. However, MerchantPlus's monthly fee includes gateway and PCI-compliance costs, so its pricing is fairly competitive compared to processors that charge separate fees for those services.
When accepting credit cards online, it's important to choose a service that provides good rates and low fees and is transparent and consistent in its pricing and terms. MerchantPlus fared well in this regard since it posts its fees, terms and pricing online, and the reps we spoke to verified this information.
MerchantPlus doesn't require a long-term contract, which gives your business more flexibility since you can use this processor on a month-to-month basis. There's no setup, gateway setup or cancellation fees. There's also no monthly minimum. MerchantPlus has a quick setup time, allowing you to get up and running within two days. It fails to meet our benchmark for clearing the account quickly because it can take more than two days for your funds to be deposited into your business bank account.
MerchantPlus has excellent customer service. The reps we spoke to were quick to follow up and provided detailed answered to our questions. This processor doesn't offer a dedicated rep or 24/7 phone support. Its website has live chat, a knowledgebase that you can use to find quick answers to your processing questions and free webinars to educate its merchants about the credit card industry.
MerchantPlus is a good option for businesses with high average ticket sizes that want to accept credit cards online. It has an average interchange-plus markup with a high per-transaction fee, but its monthly fee includes both gateway and PCI-compliance costs. It has excellent customer service and doesn't require a long-term contract.
