Heart Rate Monitoring

The best heart rate monitor is an accurate heart rate monitor. During our tests, we found that the Alta HR was 94 percent accurate. It’s not the most accurate device in our review, but it’s near the middle of the pack. The Alta HR was neither consistently high nor low in its readings, just very close in either direction to the actual BPM in most cases. The higher your heart rate, the less accurate the tracker – we found this to be universally true for the monitors we tested.

The Fitbit Alta HR also has a touchscreen that displays your heart rate right on your wrist, so you don’t need to open the app to view it. The heart rate sensor is on the underside of the tracker and uses light technology to track your heart beats.

With all the features and continuous heart rate tracking turned on, expect the battery to last about seven days. If you turn off Bluetooth and only check the screen infrequently, the battery can last longer.

Activity Tracking

This wrist heart rate monitor tracks other metrics like steps, distance and calories burned. All are customizable in the app, and you can set goals or make one a priority over the others. The Fitbit Alta HR also has an altimeter so you can track the number of stairs you climb.

The customizable watch face can display information in different orientations and different fonts, and you can choose which metric, such as heart rate or steps, shows on the first screen. You tap the screen twice to turn on the display and keep tapping to filter through all the other data. Our review team found that tapping just right can be a bit tricky and requires some patience since it may take a few tries for the screen to turn on. There aren’t any buttons, so tapping is the only control method.

Connectivity & Design

The Fitbit Alta HR is a Bluetooth heart rate monitor, so all your data automatically or manually transfers to the app. You don’t need to enter a specific mode, push a button or anything else. You just set a frequency setting, and every time you open the app, your tracker syncs.

Fitbit hands-down makes one of the best fitness and heart rate tracking apps. It’s highly customizable – you can have the tracker factor in your stride length, body measurements, BMI estimate and more. If you already have a favorite fitness app, the Fitbit is compatible with many third-party programs.

The Alta HR has smartwatch-style notifications and vibrates with notifications for calls, texts and calendar reminders. There’s a silent alarm function too, which vibrate to wake you up or remind you to move during the day. The Alta HR isn’t water-resistant, which is one of its only real downsides. Since it isn’t waterproof, you can’t track your heart rate during swims or in the shower. Carefully wipe off sweat too, and don’t submerge your wrists while doing the dishes.

Help & Support

The Fitbit Alta HR comes with a one-year warranty. The warranty starts when you connect your Alta HR to the app, so you don’t need to register or do anything else. Fitbit provides support over email, phone and live chat on its website. When we contacted Fitbit during our testing, reps provided quick, intelligent responses. You can also view an extensive list of FAQs and the user manual on the company’s website.

Summary

The Alta HR is one of the best heart rate monitor watches in our review thanks to its slim design, quality app and overall customizability. The battery life is short, but it’s a great tradeoff for smartphone notifications and an intuitive touchscreen.
