PROS / Carrier Cor's Smart Setback feature monitors temperature and humidity indoors and outdoors.
CONS / It requires professional installation.
VERDICT / Carrier Cor is a Wi-Fi thermostat that can help you manage your home's temperature and conserve energy, but it’s missing extras like advanced motion sensors that automatically adjust your home's temperature.
Carrier Cor is a smart thermostat with a large, full-color user interface. It has many essential features; for example, you can control your home's temperature from your smartphone, and it monitors temperature and humidity. However, it falls short when compared to other products in our thermostat review. Carrier is a pioneer in modern air conditioning, but the Cor is missing features found on the best programmable thermostats.
This programmable thermostat can help you conserve energy and save you money on utility bills. It has a Smart Setback feature that monitors the inside and outside temperature and humidity and appropriately adjusts your HVAC system. It uses advanced algorithms to maintain a comfortable temperature in your living space while conserving energy. Carrier also provides regular usage reports that help you identify ways to reduce energy consumption even more.
This Wi-Fi thermostat has a larger-than-average touchscreen that makes programming easy, but the design feels a little clunky compared to other thermostats. While the touchscreen display has a modern, smartphone look, the icon graphics are a little dated. The thermostat’s motion sensor brightens the screen when you walk by.
The Carrier Cor isn’t sophisticated enough to learn your habits and switch into away mode automatically when you leave home. You can easily adjust your home’s temperature from your smartphone, but this thermostat lacks geofencing, so it doesn’t automatically adjust the temperature as you drive home. It also doesn’t work in sync with other smart devices. However, the thermostat is very easy to program. You can adjust the temperature settings for Away, Home, Wake, Sleep and Vacation modes from the main menu.
Carrier requires professional installation. This is not to say that you can't install the thermostat yourself – when testing the Carrier thermostat, we installed it without professional help. It was relatively straightforward and no more complicated than most of the thermostats in our lineup. However, Carrier penalizes you for installing it yourself. The thermostat comes with a three-year warranty, which is on par with the best thermostats out there, but if you have it professionally installed, the warranty period increases to five years. If you have questions about the installation requirements or other issues related to the thermostat, you can contact Carrier via email or phone.
The Carrier Cor has plenty of features to help you conserve energy and save money on your utility bills. It monitors indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity, and it adjusts the inside temperature accordingly. It is missing some smart features, such as a sensor system to gauge when you come and go. Professional installation is required to benefit from the maximum warranty, which seems unnecessary given the number of DIY systems out there with comparable complexity. Still, the three-year warranty on DIY-installed thermostats is average.
