PROS / The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat's touchscreen display makes it very easy to use.
CONS / This unit does not have motion sensors to trigger your HVAC system if you are home outside of your usual schedule.
VERDICT / The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat looks good and has plenty of traditional energy-saving features to cut costs. Still, it lacks some state-of-the-art features found on the best programmable thermostats such as the ability to learn your routine and adjust to it.
The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat has a custom color display you can set to match your home’s decor. This smart thermostat also has great temperature-control options and good energy-management tools.
This Honeywell thermostat is compatible with systems that use up to two heating stages and two cooling stages. Any time the wireless thermostat detects problems with your heater or air conditioner, it displays an orange alert button on the home screen. It also displays simple on-screen alerts when it is time to change the air filters. Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart displays how humid it is both inside and outside. The outside temperature also displays so you can plan for your day. Unlike the best programmable thermostats, it doesn't have motion sensors to detect when you enter a room.
Using the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart, you can set up different programs for each day of the week. To establish your settings, the thermostat leads you through a series of questions such as "Is someone home all day?" and "What temperature do you prefer when you are sleeping?" Once programmed, this smart thermostat is largely self-sufficient, turning your heating and air conditioning units on and off without any further action from you. Honeywell's Total Connect Comfort app allows you to turn temperatures up or down in your home from anywhere in the world using your tablet or smartphone.
With its large touchscreen display, the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart is quite attractive and easy to use. It is one of the best-designed thermostats compared to other products in our review. Unlike most Wi-Fi thermostats, you can match the screen's background color to your decor; you can even adjust the brightness and shade of the background color.
The keypad locks so you can control who can change the temperature at home. The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart works with the Wink smart home platform. Wink works in tandem with the IFTTT task automation service to give the unit geofencing capabilities, which activate and deactivate your heating and cooling system based on your location.
During our testing, we found that installation was fairly straightforward. It doesn’t have a built-in level to help mount it evenly on the wall. It also requires a C wire, which added a few minutes to the installation process, but we were able to install the thermostat and connect it to the home network within twenty minutes. From there, programming the settings was intuitive.
Honeywell's customer support resources are good but not the best in our review. If you have questions, you can find a lot of videos and digital manuals on the Honeywell website. You can also contact the company by email, phone and live-chat if you have further questions. Honeywell does not have an online forum for the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat, something many of the top thermostat providers provide. The one-year warranty on this unit is below average compared to the two-, three- and five-year warranties provided by competitors.
The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart's onscreen interface is very easy to use, and the unit can help you save on your energy bill in many different ways. However, Honeywell is missing an online forum for technical support, and the warranty is only one year. Still, its set-it-and-forget-it controls and sleek design make Honeywell's Wi-Fi Smart a great programmable thermostat for your home.
