MyTopo is an extensive map website offering map software, printed maps and online maps. The site also has a section of historical maps that can be viewed online or purchased as laminated prints. This map site includes topographical maps, nautical charts, aeronautical charts and satellite images.
The site has a streamlined design, with a white background and very few graphic elements. MyTopo’s main page has links to the four main areas of the site: Topo Maps, Aerial Photos, Hunting/Public Land Maps and Private Land Maps. Once you choose a map type from this list, you can enter your location search in the bar above the maps. The search fields are designed for locations in the U.S. and Canada, and you can search using different criteria like latitude and longitude.
MyTopo specializes in topographical, aeronautical and nautical maps, which can be viewed online, emailed, printed at home or ordered as professional prints from the website. The site also has a paid mobile app that includes more functionality and features. After you search for a location and open your map, you can use the directional arrows to pan and the zoom bar to zoom in and out.
The menu bar has some unique features not offered on any of the other sites we surveyed. In a few simple steps, you can create custom labels with icons and place them on the map. Your customized map can then be saved, emailed or printed without registering for an account on the site. You can find these options in the Build Your Map menu. Alternately, you can create a map with custom labels and then order a professional-quality print through the website. The free version of the MyTopo application does not allow uploads, but the paid version offers more options for syncing your map with a cell phone or GPS device.
It is easy to search the site using the fields on the top left. While MyTopo only offers maps for the U.S. and Canada, it specializes in maps that other companies don’t offer such as maps of hunting land. The unique Fun Build Your Map feature is very easy to use; you just follow a few simple steps to add custom overlays to the maps you build from scratch or to prebuilt maps. There is also a tutorial for anyone who needs a bit more help.
The MyTopo website includes a section of FAQs for new and advanced users and a user’s manual to help you get started. There is also a user forum where you can share information, ask questions and answer other users’ questions.
MyTopo is a good site for map prints and the only site that has a very simple way to add custom labels to your maps. You can use any of the site’s map view options for your custom prints, and you can order a keepsake map of a recent hiking trip or one for a trip you are planning.
