Microsoft PowerPoint Review

PROS / Microsoft PowerPoint offers nearly all of the essential editing tools for photo slideshows.

CONS / You cannot publish your slideshow presentations directly to YouTube, Facebook or other social networks.

VERDICT / Microsoft PowerPoint is useful for professional presentations and text-centric projects, but it lacks some output capabilities.

Individuals in the business and education worlds have likely seen Microsoft PowerPoint at its best. This photo slideshow software is well known for creating professional slideshows. However, it has tools to create quality multimedia presentations and personal photo slideshows as well. Microsoft PowerPoint is a feature-filled application, but it lacks some input and output formats.

This slideshow creator offers every main editing tool – and some less common ones – to help you create custom slideshows. There are 26 background templates you can choose from and 50 transition effects you can add to your slideshows. You can include as many images as you want, and you can add video clips if you desire, along with audio narration. In addition, there are dynamic galleries, animations and live previews. The audio-editing features are somewhat difficult to use, however.

Where this application truly falls short is its input and output formats. You can send presentations as an email attachment, a QuickTime file, and put them onto DVD and interactive CD physical copies. You can also distribute your presentations in more inter-company ways. If you are giving a remote presentation, you can broadcast it using nothing more than a link. If you want to make the presentation available to remote users, you can publish the slides to a slide library or a SharePoint site.

However, you cannot publish your picture slideshow on mobile devices or in high definition (HD). You cannot share your slideshows with family and friends by directly uploading the presentations to YouTube, Facebook or other social networks. Also, this software is not compatible with MPEG or AVI formats.

Microsoft offers several support options. If you want help troubleshooting and learning the differences between the latest version and previous ones, PowerPoint Help has a user guide that outlines how to make a slideshow with the software’s tools. Microsoft also provides both email and phone support. However, there are no video tutorials specifically for photo slideshows, which can be useful if you do not have extensive experience with creating slideshows.

Microsoft PowerPoint serves as a functional photo slideshow creator. There aren't as many import and export options as with other photo slideshow applications, which means it's not as easy to share your finished presentation. However, with its editing tools, you can still expect high quality and powerful performance from this photo slideshow maker.
