TravelSafe offers comprehensive travel insurance, with high payout caps, several plans and prices near or below average of the companies we reviewed. It offers four different types of plans, including one that deals with medical issues only. Within each type of plan, you have several choices available to you. TravelSafe offers the most choices of all the insurance plans we reviewed. The insurance was cheaper than most plans we priced and the coverage just as good, and in some cases better, than the other trip insurances we examined. For its variety and value, TravelSafe earns our Top Ten Reviews Silver Award.

This trip insurance agency offers four different plans. The Vacation Plan has basic coverage, while the Explorer Plan offers the same features, but with higher maximums. The Medical Only plan does not cover trip cancellations and other non-medical issues. The Group Plan provides coverage for travelers in groups of 10 or more, which is good for clubs or large families traveling together. Each plan has different levels of coverage.

The price difference depends mostly on age. We priced plans for travelers in their 20s, 40s and 60s and found policy prices at or below average of the other trip insurance agencies we reviewed.

Despite the cheaper plans, the coverage was in several cases above average, especially when comparing the Explorer Plan. Of special note is the $2,500 maximum for lost luggage, which is great when you are carrying specialized sports equipment. TravelSafe does not cover change fees if you need to change a flight. It also lacks a Cancel for Any Reason option. There are multiple exceptions to trip cancellation reimbursement, so be sure to check the contract before signing up. You can find the policies online after getting a quote. Allianz Global Assistance will pay up to $250 for a flight ticket change.

The basic plan offered by TravelSafe travel insurance reimburses you for unused, non-refundable prepaid expenses when your planned journey is prevented because of death, injury or sickness. Once the trip has started, if it is interrupted for more than five hours, the insurance policy pays 100 percent of any unused, non-refundable prepaid expenses. Qualifying trip interruptions include a covered injury or illness on the part of the insured or the insured’s traveling companion, family member or business partner.

The medical coverage is within the industry standard for travel insurance, with $1 million for medical evacuation and repatriation and $100,000 for medical. This includes up to $750 in dental for damage done to natural teeth. It also has $25,000 accidental death and dismemberment coverage, also known as flight accident coverage, for fatalities or loss of limbs, vision or hearing resulting from a plane crash.

TravelSafe can help you locate a doctor. It can assist you in replacing lost or stolen prescription medications, but it does not pay for them.

This trip insurance agency requires the same kind of paperwork as most others: proof of incident, medical records, receipts and some other supporting documentation depending on the situation. Should you have to file a claim, you can do this online. It also allows you to revise the claim and check the status all online. Not every agency allows this convenience.

If you need emergency cash, such as if your wallet is stolen, it can help arrange money transfers with friends or family. It can also provide translation services and concierge services such as recommending restaurants or obtaining tickets.

Subscribers may cancel for a full refund prior to the trip and within 10 days of purchase. You also can call a toll-free phone number that is available 24/7.

TravelSafe provides comprehensive travel insurance at prices at or below the average of the other companies we evaluated. Its Explorer Plan offers extra coverage for equipment and injuries.
