If you're looking for a basic, full-size wireless keyboard that will accomplish alphanumeric input and do it with flair, the HP Wireless Elite Keyboard v2 may be just the ticket. HP combines a streamlined keyboard frame with light-touch key action and reliable 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity to deliver a no-nonsense accessory for your computer that will satisfy your need for both freedom and simplicity. After carefully weighing its merits against its deficiencies, we ranked it at number five on our lineup of best wireless computer keyboards.
With a wireless range of 30 feet supported by reliable 2.4 GHz connectivity, the Elite v2 keyboard gives you the freedom to stray from your desk without worrying about lags or dropouts. HP enables this keyboard to connect with your computer via its own device-networking receiver. The Link-5 is a tiny dongle that supports up to five compatible devices and requires only one available USB port. Setup is easy and takes only a few seconds. Once the dongle is in the computer, you push the Connect button on the keyboard and the two are in sync.
This keyboard comes with preprogrammed F keys that access common functions with the help of the Function key. It also has a web browser hotkey and dedicated volume control hotkeys. It's powered by two AAA batteries and features a battery level indicator as well as a sleep mode to help conserve the battery. The Elite v2 doesn't have an on/off switch and the manufacturer doesn't offer an estimated battery life, so we're left to guess that it will likely last between 12 to 24 months since this keyboard doesn't really have any fancy bells or whistles that are typically responsible for draining batteries.
The sleek and slim profile of the Elite v2 is a design element we find most impressive. It sits almost flush with the work surface and so your hands can rest there when not typing without feeling any strain. It also has flip-out feet for adjusting the typing angle as desired. If you are one who generally has a beverage nearby while you are working, this keyboard will give you some piece of mind knowing that it is spill resistant.
The Elite v2 has a standard layout for the most part. HP shifted the arrows and delete/home/page keys and relocated the print screen, insert, scroll lock and pause/break keys to reside to the right of the F keys. It offers quiet light-touch typing made possible by flat, chiclet-style keys that operate using a scissor-switch mechanism. However, they are not concavely shaped like the keys on some of its higher ranked competitors. The keys are very much like those you would find on a laptop, and while this may be perfect for someone who is already accustomed to typing on a laptop, it will take some getting used to if you have always used a standard mechanical keyboard.
Help & Support
HP provides ample online support for its many products and services. The product page for the Elite v2 contains a link to HP's customer service as well as a tab that shows you support options, which includes a warranty information link, a returns and exchange information link, and a support information link that takes you to the HP Customer Care page. Here you will find additional links to various services as well as answers to common questions about setup and troubleshooting. If you need to speak to a customer service representative or technician, there also is a toll-free telephone number listed on the product page. Although HP's support services are readily available online, we found it tedious trying to navigate through so much general information to find anything specifically related to this particular keyboard. This keyboard comes with a 21-day return policy and a short one-year warranty – the shortest among the products in our lineup.
The HP Wireless Elite Keyboard v2 stands out as an updated peripheral with crisp, clean lines; it would look great sitting on your desk or hanging out with your entertainment components. It incorporates responsive scissor-switch keys and reliable wireless connectivity for optimal performance. It follows a less-is-more philosophy when it comes to bells and whistles, delivering a basic keyboard augmented by only four extra keys. If you want a modern, yet uncomplicated keyboard and intend to use it for typing and accessing basic media and internet applications, you'll find that this one meets the criteria and is economical to boot.
