HostPapa Review

PROS / The dashboard allows you to customize the hosting experience to your liking.

CONS / The support experience is hurt by long wait times and separate customer support channels.

VERDICT / HostPapa is a better than average web host that provides the tools to run two sites under one account.

Web hosting is a very competitive field. It's easy for quality services to get lost in the shuffle. HostPapa is that type of company. It offers a good balance of site creation and hosting features but isn't as heavily advertised as the major hosting players.

Its shared hosting plans allow for some flexibility by offering a Starter plan and two premium business packages. As we evaluated the Starter plan, we appreciated being able to run two websites under one account. Among its competitors, two managed domains is the average. It also comes packed with 100 GB of disk space. While that may not be the security blanket that unlimited is, it's far more than we needed to create and run two sites with the expectations of decent site traffic. Everything in this plan seems to have a limit, like three subdomains and 25 MySQL databases, for example. However, it is unlikely to go above 100 email accounts, especially with catch-all email addresses being set in place.

The support features of this web hosting service stumbles in places. Every area of support is so separate that we had to make several attempts to resolve concerns. Specifically, when creating an account, we called sales to verify the account and finally get the hosting account live. We were then given a phone number and asked to call back. We had similar experiences on live chat as well. We were happy that support didn't consist of a sales team that was masked as support. However, it can become aggravating for any customer to wait 15 minutes for live chat and be told to ask the question through email.

On the opposite side, the control panel has many benefits. HostPapa uses the standard cPanel for its hosting dashboard. This interface allows you to download apps in one click, check statistics and create email accounts quickly. In terms of its offerings, HostPapa is aligned with the best shared hosting services by offering a year of free domain ownership and the ability to transfer sites to HostPapa for free.

We ran into a few snags even getting the account created. This web hosts makes you work to be a client. However, HostPapa uses the familiar cPanel, which allowed us to customize the site and how it's managed. While this may not be a top ten site, it still manages to be competitive in the sea of hosting competitors.
