The well-designed Cuisinart Egg Central CEC-10 can cook as many as 10 eggs at once, and this multi-purpose egg cooker will yield a batch that is soft-, medium- or hard-boiled. You can also poach four eggs in a special tray or make an omelet that includes as many as three eggs. Our testing for hard-cooked eggs showed the Cuisinart produced first-rate eggs prepared exactly the way we wanted them, with thoroughly cooked yolks and firm whites that tasted wonderful. We experienced no difficulties in cooking, including no water dripping onto the counter, and two cool-to-the-touch handles on each side make lifting the lid easier and safer than other models.
This Cuisinart egg boiler is made of BPA-free plastic parts and sports an attractive brushed stainless-steel lid. However, with its compact dimensions (6 inches high and 5.2 inches wide), you can easily tuck it away in a cupboard or closet. It has built-in storage space for the electric cord on its base, which is helpful.
This device is equipped with two detachable tiers: a lower tier that holds seven eggs and an upper tier that holds three more. You measure water in the accompanying beaker, put that into the base, add a tier or two depending on how many eggs you're cooking, gently poke a tiny hole in each egg with the piercing pin that comes with the measuring cup, and put them in place. Then push the on button and a 600-watt heater creates steam that cooks the eggs. The steam escapes through holes in the lid. The piercing pin is sharp, unlike some lesser models, and comes with a small plastic cover.
In addition, the Cuisinart Egg Central CEC-10 provides helpful features including an audible alert that tells you when the eggs are done, and an LED light indicator showing the machine is on.
The handy Dash Rapid Egg Cooker lets you boil six eggs at one time, and you can choose to poach two eggs, make an omelet or use a fork to scramble eggs in an upper tier tray.
Unfortunately, there is no on/off button, so you will need to reach past a warm appliance to get unplug it once the food is done.
With this egg cooker, the water in the base heats, creates steam to cook your eggs and the steam escapes from holes in the top of the machine. When your eggs are cooked to your liking, a rather loud alarm will sound so you know the eggs are done. You might have to experiment with water levels to get eggs exactly the way you want them. Along with hard-cooked eggs, you also can choose to poach two eggs, make an omelet or use a fork to scramble eggs in an upper tier tray.
Clean-up is a snap since this Dash egg boiler is made of BPA-free plastic that is durable enough to put in the dishwasher. This is a petite machine at 7.6 inches wide and 6.5 inches high, so it's easy to store out of sight in your kitchen unless your family eats so many eggs that you want it to be a permanent fixture on a countertop. The top is a see-through dome so you can keep an eye on the eggs as they cook, although some steam can block the view a bit.
Best 7-Egg Cooker
The Hamilton Beach 25500 performed well in our testing and produced seven hard-cooked eggs with just-right yolks and firm, but not rubbery, whites that tasted great. We found no cracked eggs in the process and the cooking worked nicely, except for a tiny bit of water dripping out near the handle. This affordable egg cooker is designed with an on-off switch so you don't have to stretch your arm past a warm machine to turn it off by unplugging it. At 7.4 inches wide and 5.75 inches high, it is compact for each storage, and it weighs just 1.7 pounds.
Unlike many egg cookers, the Hamilton Beach does not require you to poke a hole in the top of an egg before cooking, and our test eggs turned out exactly the way we wanted them. You get a sharp egg-piercing tool with the water measuring cup if you want to take that extra step, but we found it made no difference in the consistency of the eggs we cooked.
Like with other egg cookers, you measure the correct amount of water for the eggs you want to cook (the proportions are noted on the measuring cup) and pour it into the water reservoir, put the number of eggs you want to cook and turn the machine on so the water heats and steam cooks your eggs. You'll know the eggs are done when the unit sounds an alert. It took just over 17 minutes to cook seven eggs in our testing, and not one ended up cracked. One difficulty we encountered is that the markings on the water measuring cup are a bit difficult to see. The plastic parts must be hand-washed and you simply wipe the water reservoir clean with a cloth.
Best Microwave Egg Boiler
The Nordic Ware Egg Boiler can cook four eggs in your microwave in only eight minutes.
This compact egg cooker is made of BPA- and melamine-free plastic in the U.S., and Nordic Ware keeps tabs on how it’s made and what products are used to ensure the smallest ecological footprint possible.
When we followed the user instructions during our tests, we got eggs that had firm whites but rather soft yolks with a ring of medium-cooked egg yolk surrounding each. A second test yielded the same results. The eggs tasted great, but you’ll need to play around with the cooking time if you want hard-cooked eggs.
This device is small, just 5.2 inches wide and 6 inches tall, and despite its egg shape, it’s easy to store. Since it only weighs about 8 ounces, you can take it with you when you travel to make a fast breakfast in your hotel room’s microwave.
Best Elite Cuisine Egg Cooker
The versatile Elite Cuisine EGC-007 can cook up to seven soft-, medium- or hard-boiled eggs at a time.
With its extra plastic trays, you can also use it to make an omelet or two poached eggs.
When we tested this device, we had good luck cooking eggs in the shell to a medium texture, but the egg cooker fell a bit short with hard-boiled eggs – they had firm whites but soft, rather runny yolks. Still, the eggs we cooked tasted great. You just may have to play around with the cooking time a bit to get good hard-boiled eggs.
This cooker comes with an egg piercing tool that, unlike those that came with some other egg cookers, did a great job piercing shells without breaking them. The machine also comes with a protective cover to spare your fingers, and it has a helpful auto shut-off feature.
Why Trust Us?
We at Top Ten Reviews have been researching, analyzing and grading kitchen appliances for performance, quality, safety, food results and features since 2010. After we research a wide range of products within a category, we narrow the field by scoring them using a proprietary system that helps determine which products to include in our final list. This system helps us rank the best products in hundreds of categories.
How We Tested
We spent 40 hours researching and testing egg cookers for their performance, ease of use, cooking methods, egg capacity and safety features. We followed each manufacturer’s instructions for hard-cooked eggs, put in the correct number of eggs, carefully measured the proper amount of water and timed each egg cooker to see if it did the job within the advertised time. We measured the external temperature of the machine since this could be a potential safety problem in a kitchen, and we also checked the internal temperature.
In addition, we determined if the egg cooker had a real on/off button or simply an indicator light showing it was working. The machines that operate simply by plugging them in were docked points since this often means you’ll have to reach past a hot machine to stop the cooking. Egg cookers gained points if they had a buzzer or alarm that alerts you when the eggs are done.
After that, we looked to see how many eggshells cracked (not good for Easter eggs, among other things). Then came the ultimate test: We checked each egg for its texture to see if it was fully cooked. A properly prepared hard-cooked egg presents a pale yellow yolk that is fully cooked and reasonably solid, although it will crumble a bit when you touch it with a fork. The egg whites should be firm but not tough or rubbery.
Things to Look for in an Egg Cooker
Whether you make eggs for the health benefits or as a tasty snack, electric cookers make it easy to cook them in a variety of ways, primarily using steam or your microwave. Find the best egg cooker that fits your lifestyle at a price that also fits your budget.
Egg cookers come in many styles. Different designs make boiled, poached and scrambled eggs, and some even make patties for easy breakfast sandwiches. In just a few minutes, you can make one or several eggs to eat right away or to save for another day.
Bruce Kjar, an experienced home cook from Utah, said this might be a great value for families who need to get breakfast ready for many people on busy mornings. He also suggests that this would come in handy at other times when you need plenty of cooked eggs, for something like egg salad, but have other meal preparation to do.
More on Specialty Appliances
One of the most important features to look for in an egg cooker is multiple cooking options. If you love breakfast sandwiches, look for a device that cooks eggs you have cracked open, preferably in a round shape to fit onto your English muffin or sliced bread. Most countertop egg steamers can make boiled or poached eggs in under 20 minutes. Boiled egg options include soft-, medium- and hard-boiled.
The best cookers notify you of a finished cooking cycle in different ways. Some alert you with an audible signal that tells you to turn the machine off. Others shut themselves off when the cooking is finished. A few models even have a feature to keep the eggs warm until you're ready for them. Some electric egg cookers have a timer on the machine that you can watch, but the best models base cook times on how much water you put in the bottom of the machine and let you know when cooking is done. We did encounter some cookers with no alert system, which means you must watch the clock or time the machine with your phone, which is a nuisance.
Number of Eggs
Another important feature is how many eggs a cooker can prepare at once. Electric cookers often hold up to 10 eggs in a cooking cycle. Microwave egg cookers, however, usually hold up to four eggs at a time. If you're cooking for a large family every day or you like to keep hard-boiled eggs on hand for a snack, having a cooker that can handle a dozen eggs at once can save you time.
What Does An Egg Cooker Cost?
As kitchen appliances go, egg cookers are inexpensive. They tend to range from as little as $13 to as much as $40. We found that a high price doesn’t necessarily indicate good performance.
