For people who do not have a lot of experience using 3D home design software for Mac, MyFourWalls is a good place to start. Its user-friendly interface and low price tag make this software especially attractive for someone who is using interior design software for the first time. When you begin the program, you can choose between building a floor plan from scratch and using one of the preset layouts. Whichever you choose, it doesn’t take long to get used to how the program operates. This simplicity of use also means it lacks some design options you may need for complex projects, however.
This program is designed for interior decorating or minor construction modifications. It doesn’t have advanced functions for more complex design jobs. This program is a good tool to help with such interior decorating jobs as removing non-loadbearing interior walls. However, it is also limited in its exterior landscaping functionality. You can, for instance, add a pool in the backyard, but you can't design more intricate water features like ponds, waterfalls or fountains.
Unlike some other 3D interior design software for Mac that we reviewed, this program lacks such exterior design tools as topography, deck design, sidewalks, trees, ramps and landscaping. If you are seeking to create your dream home down to the finest detail, including your outdoor space, MyFourWalls isn’t going to bring that to life.
You can view your 2D floor plan and 3D model simultaneously, or you can choose to view each one separately. Navigating your floor plan is simple in both 2D and 3D views. In 3D, you can click and hold within the model to look around, or you can navigate using the icons that appear in the bottom-right corner of your 3D model. With the 2D floor plan, there is a little camera icon you can move around to change your point of view.
Mac software is known for great drag-and-drop functions, and MyFourWalls is no exception. From a dropdown menu, you can select an assortment of objects to add to your digital home, including kitchen appliances, rugs, bookcases, wall art, windows and doors. You simply drag and drop whatever object you want into your floor plan.
Once you find the image you want, you can easily position it anywhere within the design. Going back in and editing a draft of your design is also an intuitive, quick process. You can customize each item’s dimensions, color and placement. This program also gives you access to a nice selection of objects in the Trimble 3D Warehouse. However, the program only supports objects saved in the COLLADA format, meaning it doesn't import objects saved in other formats.
If you are experienced in computer-aided design or want more control over the design of your home, the simple functionality of this Mac home design software might not be enough for you. For example, you are unable to manipulate the details required for adding curved walls, trim or roofing overlays and for designing furniture from scratch.
The overall support from the manufacturer is limited. You can download a manual online and get answers to common questions at the FAQs page on the website. We got answers to our question via email, but there is no phone support. Fortunately, this software is easy enough that it doesn't require a lot of technical support.
MyFourWalls is a good program if you are new to interior design software. It is easy to use and offers a plethora of objects and materials with which to design your home. This is affordable software that allows you to quickly and easily create a floor plan of your dream home, but it doesn’t have a lot of extras for more complex home and landscaping designs.
