Verdict / The Anova Precision Cooker's low price, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled features, intuitive design and powerful results make it one of the best sous vide machines on the market.

The Anova Precision Cooker Wi-Fi is a solid sous vide machine that is economically priced and user friendly. Its large, bright display is easy to view, and the app integration means you can have remote control of the machine. The simple, straightforward design makes it a popular choice, and additionally its cooking results and low price make it our best overall choice.

Performance & Heating

Each sous vide underwent two tests: a steak test and a chicken test. This immersion device created deliciously tender meat in both instances and was a favorite among our taste testers, though the meat did turn out slightly tougher than the ChefSteps Joule. It also worked quickly to heat the 2.5 gallons of water we used taking only 35 minutes to reach 130 degrees and 50 minutes to reach 150 degrees. We found the Anova sous vide easy to operate as it provided both tangible buttons and an app for you to use. On the side is a wheel that you turn to raise or lower the temperature until it gets to your desired setting and then you can press the start button on the top of the device to get it heating. We found the mobile app not only easy to navigate but also compatible for both Apple and Android users, so a wide audience can use it.

The Anova’s 800-watt heating element maintains an accuracy of plus or minus 0.01 degrees Fahrenheit. Such accuracy is critical for the precise temperatures required for proper sous vide cooking. A luminous display clearly shows temperature and other features, and it’s large enough that you can see it from across the kitchen.

Cooking Specifications

The Anova Precision Cooker Wi-Fi is designed to be sturdy. Thick plastic lines the upper case, and a removable stainless-steel skirt covers the heating rods. A detachable clamp attaches the machine to any water container, firmly keeping it in place. This unit is not only solid, but relatively small. Sized at 14 inches tall, 2.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches long, it is small enough to store in most drawers. This device cannot go lower than 77 degrees and goes as high as 210 degrees, which gives you a decent range to work with. It is designed to heat up to five gallons, which is mid-range for sous vide cooking and will allow you to cook a decent amount of food at once. If you're wanting to cook a large gathering, you'll probably want a device that can heat more water, like the Nomiku. When cooking, you'll want the base of the Anova to be immersed between 2.5 and 7.5 inches to allow the device to run properly.

Convenience & Safety

This unit has a few distinct features. It boasts Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, enabling you to manage the device through an online app. The app includes functions such as checking the temperature, starting the cooking process and turning off the machine. The app also provides notification alerts and offers a collection of sous vide recipes. Another feature is its safety cutoff. The machine will turn off if the temperature gets too hot or the water goes below safe levels. As many sous vide recipes require long periods of unsupervised cooking, the safety cutoff means you can leave your sous vide circulator on without worrying it'll burn the house down.

Another factor to consider is the relatively low wattage of this machine. Comparable sous vide machines offer wattages as high as 1,500. With only 800 watts, this machine will take longer to heat water than others. However, this won't be a major issue if you start with hot tap water, as only a slight temperature increase is needed. The lower wattage also requires less energy to operate, saving electricity costs in the long term. This sous vide was the third lightest of any we tested, weighing only 2.5 pounds. In comparison, the heaviest sous vide weighs 11.8 pounds, which makes it harder to store and lift.

The Anova Precision Cooker Wi-Fi is ideal if you're looking for a reliable sous vide machine with online functionality. Its solid and tasteful design make it a standout immersion circulator, and its convenient app and other features make it particularly easy to use.
