American Family provides renters insurance at excellent prices and with good coverage. It does not cover every city or state in the nation, however, and the website cannot give you a complete quote. Therefore, it's best to consider this insurance when you have a local agent you can talk to. Nonetheless, its comprehensive coverage at competitive prices earns it our Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award.
We obtained quotes for renters insurance for a typical apartment in several different areas of the United States. American Family did not provide insurance in certain areas that were high risk for claims. In fact, AmFam did not provide insurance in the six high-risk cities we checked. Where it does provide insurance, however, its rates were among the lowest of the ten companies we reviewed. As with most companies, the premiums do not cover flood damage; you need a separate policy if you live in a flood zone.
Like most insurance companies, American Family covers damage to your possessions caused by natural disasters, fire, theft and vandalism. It can cover water damage, say in the event your upstairs neighbor's bathtub leaks, but this costs extra. It covers debris removal and taking care of mold damage, and it provides protection in case of identity theft. However, American Family differentiates between loss due to accidents or acts of God, and loss due to theft, however, so check your policy to be sure you understand the differences in coverage before signing.
AmFam's property insurance coverage was better than average for high-value items. It does not set a limit at all for electronics. Most companies have a per-item or total limit they reimburse you, selling you an endorsement to get extra coverage. Thus, if you have expensive computers, American Family is a good choice. It also has one of the highest limits for firearms, something to consider if you own guns.
This agency also has limited coverage of business property. Several companies require you to get a separate business policy. For the case we quoted, the amount was $1,500, which was about average.
The online quote system suggests other insurance agencies if American Family cannot directly provide you coverage. When it can, it takes you through the process, then directs you to an agent to finish the quote. You cannot customize the policy online. Agents responded quickly both via phone and email. Thus, you're better off calling your local agent rather than using the online quote process.
Unlike most insurance companies, AmFam's loss-of-use payout varies by state. Loss of use covers extra expenses if your residence is unlivable. Most set a specific limit on how much it pays or how long it reimburses you. American Family, however, sets its maximum at 12 or 24 months, or sets a monetary limit. The limits are all within the norm, but be sure you understand how this works before signing the policy.
American Family insurance provides some of the cheapest apartment and rental home insurances of the companies we compared. Its coverage was often better for high-end items. It does not directly provide insurance in some areas but directs you to other companies. However, when you can get AmFam, it's worth pricing out.
