Homeowners left with useless security devices as Spectrum Home Security closes

Subscribers to Spectrum Home Security services are about to be left to fend for themselves after Spectrum announced that they will no longer be supporting their home security devices from February 5th, 2020. Spectrum says that this shutdown is the knock-on result of their partner companies shutting down “the equipment and network service necessary for our systems to function.”

But what will current users do with the Spectrum equipment? That’s all a bit up in the air at the moment. Spectrum’s official website states that customers will “receive communication from us with specific instructions regarding what equipment you'll need to return and how you can return it.” That’s all well and good, but there’s no word yet on whether people will be getting refunds on any of this expensive technology that they’ve paid for.

Worse still, some people have reported that they have contacted Spectrum asking to convert the cost of their now worthless equipment into credit for other Spectrum services, but that they have had their requests declined.

It’s not all bad news for Spectrum Home Security subscribers though. Spectrum have announced that they’re working with Ring and Abode to offer exclusive offers for users looking to transition to either of those services.

The Abode deal offers a free 8-piece Abode Alarm Security Kit when you purchase a year of professional monitoring (at a slightly discounted price), as well as optional free installation. Likewise, the Ring offer includes a 7-piece Ring Alarm Security Kit when you subscribe for a year of professional monitoring, and also offers free installation.

These deals don’t refund you for your existing kit, but they at least mean that you don’t need to spend anything on replacing your security setup. Both offers do require you to sign up for a costly professional monitoring service though.

If you’re a Spectrum Home Security customer who will be affected by this shutdown and you are considering switching to either Abode or Ring, please check out our reviews of both services to see what we thought of them. Thankfully, Spectrum weren't one of our top picks so you might even be upgrading to a better security service provider.
