Dyson launch a new robot vacuum with twice the suction of its rivals — and a brushbar which is a brand-first

There's a new robot vacuum kid on the block; the Dyson 360 Vis Nav. Today (March 19, 2024) is the day that it officially launches in the U.S which boldly claims to be the most powerful robot with twice the suction of any other robot vacuum cleaner.

Achieved by the 360 degree vision which responds to dust and dirt levels detected, it's also packed full of funky features to make your vacuum cleaning as autonomous as possible. We'll throw some (more) tech talk at you: Hyperdymium motor, Piezo sensor and triple-action brushbar. These all work in sync to give you a vacuum clean like no other.

And you won't even have to lift a finger. As with all of the best robot vacuums, this is the beauty of them. Control can be done so by on-board commands on the robot vac, through the MyDyson app or by using Amazon Alexa or Google Home. It'll also return to base on it's own when it needs to charge either during or after a sweep around the home. But, and it's a big BUT; it will not self-empty.

It was developed by a team of engineers across Dyson campuses in the UK, Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia, with many based at Dyson’s new RDD Center for Robotics at Hullavington, UK. The Dyson 360 Vis Nav has been available to buy in Australia for some time, while the UK and now US launch has come a little later. It's been four years since its predecessor, and we've compared them — Dyson 360 Vis Nav vs Dyson Heurist — to see which one comes out on top.

Dyson 360 Vis Nav: what does it all mean?

From how we see it, it's that 360-degree vision system which is the key to the success of this little guy. With this tech it knows where it has been, sees where to clean, and is intelligent enough to respond to dust sensed in the home and create dust maps of your home. It does this through a fisheye lens which allows the robot to have a panoramic view of the home and accurately interpret its surroundings.

The clever processor will then think and adapt to its surrounding, collecting data from sensors to pinpoint its position within three inches. All twenty-six sensors onboard the robot will perform specific tasks, including dust detection, obstacle avoidance and will help to guide the Dyson 360 Vis Nav back to base for a refuel.

What backs the bold claim that it has twice the suction of other robot vacuum cleaners is the Dyson Hyperdymium motor which spins up to 110,000rpm to deliver the mega suction. Suction power will automatically be adjusted with thanks to a "piezo" sensor that monitors dust levels 15,000 times a second to detect invisible particles invisible to the human eye.

The new Dyson triple-action brush bar is the first by the brand to combine three ways to deep clean with this powerful, adjusting suction: soft ‘Fluffy’ nylon for large debris pick up on hard floors; anti-static carbon fiber filaments for fine dust pick up on hard floors; and stiff nylon bristles to dig into carpets. 

And that's not all. With an advanced "actuator" (a sensor that redirects the suction) then edges and corners will automatically be cleaned. The D-shaped body will help get into those tricky areas, too.
