The Craftsman 79437 is a 25cc, two-cycle gas weed whacker with a user-friendly curved shaft – the curved end helps to balance the trimmer, so it may put less strain on shorter users than other models. However, the engine is on the small side compared to those in other trimmers we compared. In addition, the curved end of the 52-inch shaft limits the weed eater’s reach and increases the likelihood of accidentally hitting your shoes or pant legs. It also makes it harder to reach areas of your yard like under a deck, lawn furniture or underbrush.

Like all the weed whackers we tested, the Craftsman 79437 has a dual line, which creates more precise cuts than a single line. However, the string isn’t wound; instead, you must thread cut string through the head. You can purchase replacement pre-cut strings or a spool of string from your local Craftsman store. Not having to take apart the spool to rewind the string may sound appealing, but it can take just as much effort to remove the worn-down nubs of string, which leads to lots of downtime when your use the weed whacker.

This gas trimmer did a decent job cutting grass, weeds and small branches. It lacks anti-vibration technology, so your arms might feel it after a long job. It’s also a noisy machine. The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) recommends wearing hearing protection when you're exposed to constant sounds louder than 85 dB, and this machine is much louder than that. If you’re interested in a quieter model, consider the Weed Eater W25SFK – it has similar functionality but makes less noise.

The Craftsman gas trimmer has a wide, 16-inch cutting path, which is surprising considering its compact size. It only holds 10 ounces of gas, so it runs low quickly. However, this trimmer saves gas by stopping the head when the engine idles – this also substantially reduces the noise level when idling.

This gas trimmer comes with a standard two-year warranty and good online support. If you ever have problems, you can use the service center locator on the manufacturer’s website.
