PROS / The diagnostic consistency was 99 percent.
CONS / This suite of system repair tools lacks many of the advanced tools.
VERDICT / The WinZip System Utilities Suite is very consistent, but the overall improvement to performance and boot-up speed was not impressive.
The WinZip System Utilities Suite is PC repair software designed with the purpose of improving your computer's performance while maintaining PC health. In our tests, this system repair app produced above-average results in most aspects, but it was never impressive, though it posted one of the highest diagnostic consistency scores. In addition, it lacks most of the advanced tools found in the best system repair software we reviewed.
To find the best PC repair software, we started by using PCMark 8 to benchmark the performance of our test computer. Then we installed WinZip and used every available optimization tool. After optimization, we used PCMark 8 again to measure whether improvements to performance were made by the app.
The PCMark 8 benchmarking tests evaluated word and data processing, graphics processing, web browsing speed and video chat quality. As part of our testing, we also gauged whether there were any improvements to boot-up speed and diagnostic consistency.
The average overall improvement that WinZip made to our test computer was 9.5 percent, which was above average by about 1 percent. The app improved word and data processing performance by 7.2 percent, which was the highest improvement made in our tests. However, it decreased web browsing by .02 percent and only improved graphics processing by .18 percent. For comparison, the best PC repair software in our review only produced a 12.5 percent overall improvement, and you need a 20 percent improvement or better before the increase is noticeable without benchmarking software.
WinZip's startup manager only improved the boot-up speed by 7.5 percent, which is about a 4.5-second improvement if your computer usually takes one minute to boot up. By contrast, the best system repair software improved boot-up speed by 32.5 percent.
Perhaps its best feature, WinZip scored a 99 percent in our diagnostic consistency tests. While there is no correlation between diagnostic consistency and actual performance improvements, it is an indication that the app isn't exaggerating diagnostic results to make it appear as though it's doing more to "repair" your computer than it really is.
To find this score, we scanned the test computer, fixed the errors, and scanned the computer again. For a perfect score, it wouldn't recognize additional errors on the second scan. We ran this test almost 30 times and WinZip was nearly perfect. In addition, the app received a B+ for ease of use. The interface is clean and simple, which makes using the optimization tools very easy.
As for advanced tools, WinZip System Utilities Suite is lacking. While you can access tools for system backup and restore, file recovery and registry repair, it doesn't feature shortcut repair, security and privacy optimization, a file shredder, file encryption and a solid-state drive optimizer. These advanced tools are likely superfluous to most basic users, but they can be handy. The value of these tools really depends on how much control you want over your computer and how much you're willing to learn how to effectively use these tools.
WinZip System Utilities Suite improved our test computer by 9.5 percent, which was above average, though just barely. However, the boot-up speed improvement was far below average with just a 7.5 percent improvement. In addition, the suite lacks many of the advanced features you'd find with the best PC system repair software. However, the diagnostic consistency was among the most consistent.
