Alienware m15 R7

1. Alienware m15 R7

This powerful gaming laptop makes some sacrifices to keep costs down.

Type: Laptop | CPU: 12th Gen Intel Core | Graphics card options: NVIDIA GeForce RTX

Excellent performance on the dollar
Snappy, responsive display
Loud fans

The Alienware m15 R7 is at the cheaper end of Alienware gaming laptops, and strikes a clever balance in terms of value for money. It’s not a terribly swish-looking laptop, nor does it boast a build of premium material. Instead, all the value is packed into performance. So, while you don’t get the ultra-slim build of an Alienware X-series gaming laptop, and the construction is a somewhat cheap-feeling plastic rather than a luxurious magnesium/aluminum combo. But what you do get is a highly capable gaming laptop that’ll keep going through marathon play sessions.

There are multiple processor and graphics card options, but whichever you pick, you’re going to get a laptop that absolutely whips through even demanding tasks. The laptop can handle 60fps gaming with all sliders at maximum just fine, and if you feel the need to stress-test at higher frame rates, you’ll be able to see just how intense a workload this thing can handle. Of course, you’ll hear it too – the fan setup that keeps the Alienware m15 R7 running is not what you’d call quiet, as plenty of its user reviewers are fond of pointing out. Stick to headphones and you’ll be fine.

Alienware Aurora R12

2. Alienware Aurora R12

Skip back a generation and get a great gaming desktop for less.

Type: Desktop | CPUs: 11th Gen Intel Core | Graphics card options: Nvidia GeForce RTX, Nvidia GeForce GTX, AMD RX

Top-notch graphical performance
Highly customisable
Large physical footprint

This isn’t the newest in the Alienware Aurora line of gaming PCs, with the Aurora R13 and Ryzen Edition R14 having arrived since. However, the Alienware Aurora R12 is still widely available from retailers like Best Buy and Amazon, and may well give you more bang for your buck.

It impressed us highly in our review at the time. The Alienware Aurora R12 uses Nvidia graphics cards, with superior Ampere architecture, loads of memory and proper ray-tracing. You’ll be able to enjoy a gaming experience that’s a cut above the rest thanks to these (if you want something more well-rounded, perhaps for photo and video editing, AMD graphics cards are also an option). CPU-wise, the Aurora R12 uses Intel 11th Gen, which again are optimal for gaming.

The design of the Aurora R12 is as extra as Alienware enthusiasts have come to expect. The oval case and interior lighting give it a sleek, attractive look, and the build quality is robust. Weighing around 40lbs, this is not a lightweight computer, and you can expect it to take up a fair amount of space.

Alienware X14 R1

3. Alienware X14 R1

Sleek and ultra-slim, this is a powerful gaming laptop with bags of style.

Type: Laptop | CPU: 12th Gen Intel Core | Graphics card options: Nvidia GeForce RTX

Incredibly slender and portable
Cheapest of the X-series
Battery could be better

The Alienware X-series are designed to be ultra-slim gaming laptops that you can take anywhere with you. Accordingly, the Alienware X14 R1 – the smallest model – weighs just 3.95 lbs and measures just 0.57 inches in thickness. It’s a waif-like thing, and its space-age design impresses too. This is the kind of laptop it’s fun to be seen with – the kind people will stop and ask you about.

This would mean nothing if performance wasn’t up to scratch, but the Alienware X14 R1 does very well for itself, offering a comprehensive range of options in terms of CPU and graphics. You can outfit it with a variety of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, and it generally does an admirable job of keeping up with comparable rivals like the Razer Blade 14.

Its weakness is generally agreed to be the battery – it’s by no means bad, but does lag a bit behind rivals in terms of how long it lasts. The touchpad is also a bit small, cramped and generally not that fun to use, though of course gamers will be using their own mouse anyway. With the basic configuration starting at around $1,499, you can get a decent amount of power for your money here.

Alienware m17 R5

4. Alienware m17 R5

A big old rig for gamers, with a super-responsive display.

Type: Laptop | CPU: AMD Ryzen (7 or 9) | Graphics card options: Nvidia GeForce RTX, AMD Radeon RX

Mechanical keyboard option
Fast, highly responsive display
Bulky for a laptop

The Alienware m17 R5 is a laptop that can be customised in a number of interesting ways – though of course, these all do add to the price. So, let’s look at the cheapest configuration, and see what exactly that gets us. For a start, picking the cheapest display option may not get us the headline refresh rate of 480Hz that grabbed so many headlines, but it does get us a 17.3-inch FHD display with a refresh rate of 165Hz. Which, let’s be honest, is far from bad! Pair it with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card and AMD Ryzen 7 CPU, and you’ve got a pretty beefy gaming setup that’s going to handle all but the highest-intensity tasks without any problems.

If you’re willing to add $100 or so to the base price of $1,449, then you get a really cool feature – the Cherry MX mechanical keyboard, which feels just great to use, with satisfying tactile feedback. This bit of extravagance is strictly optional though, and the basic keyboard will work just fine.

Alienware Aurora R13

5. Alienware Aurora R13

A gaming PC for those who like a simpler life.

Type: Desktop | CPU: 12th Gen Intel Core | Graphics card options: NVIDIA GeForce GTX

Lots of ports
Often discounted
Harder to customize/upgrade

One of the newer Alienware rigs, the Aurora R13 nevertheless sees frequent discounts and offers, both from Dell themselves and from other retailers. These do come and go, so if you like the look of it and see a tempting offer, we’d recommend you pounce on it.

The Alienware Aurora R13 can be fitted with a meaty spec straight out of the box, and is clearly pitched at those who just want to buy a gaming PC that works well rather than opening up the side and tinkering with the parts – essentially, those who want a console-like experience.

The cooling fans can kick in quite loud at seemingly random times – though this is generally the case with most Alienware rigs, and most users have come to accept it as one of those things. The Aurora R13 is an excellent rig for high-end gaming, and will handle the stresses of 4K 60fps play.

What we look for

When Top Ten Reviews tests out and reviews the best computers and best laptops, whether for gaming or other applications, there are a number of key criteria we’re looking for. With Alienware computers specifically, you’re getting something that’s geared towards gaming, so it makes sense to focus on the specs and components that are going to deliver a premium gaming experience.

The CPU, or Central Processing Unit, is the computer’s brain. It’s this component that allows the desktop or laptop to process information and deliver a smooth and polished experience, whether you’re browsing the web or running Shadow of the Tomb Raider at more than 60fps. Alienware computers tend to use Intel CPUs – the 12th Gen are the newest, with 11th Gen also a highly credibly option, and you’ll have a choice between i3, i5, i7, and i9, with the latter being the fastest. Naturally, the more speed you can get, the better, but it does come at a cost.

The other half of the gaming experience is graphic performance, so you also need to pay attention to the computer’s GPU (Graphics Processing Unit, commonly referred to as graphics cards). On the later Alienware models, these tend to be powerful NVIDIA GeForce cards – once again, the more cash you’re willing to put in, the better performance you’ll get out.

All this processing generates a lot of heat, so it is essential for an Alienware computer to have a capable cooling system. Many of the newer models use sophisticated liquid cooling systems, in addition tor fan-based systems, which allows them to keep running safely for longer periods.
