Of the food scales we reviewed, the Ozeri Epicurean Digital Kitchen Scale is one of the most stylish – it has a thick, arched base and an elegant glass weighing platform. It performs rather well too. In our tests, this scale scored nearly perfectly for accuracy and consistency. However, it displays weights in fewer units of measurement than the best kitchen scales.
In our accuracy test, this scale performed as well as or better than the best food scales. It scored perfectly, displaying the correct weight for every item we tested it with.
The Epicurean Digital Kitchen Scale also earned a near-perfect score in our consistency test, only yielding two incorrect weights out of 25 tries. For our consistency test, we placed food off-center on the weighing platform to see if we still got accurate results. Accuracy across the entire scale platform is important when you weigh items that are thick on one end and thin on the other – for example, a trout. It can affect cooking times and the overall results.
This Ozeri scale has a substantial weight capacity – it can handle items as heavy as 18 pounds. Only two other scales we reviewed match or exceed that limit. The Epicurean Digital Kitchen Scale displays weight down to 0.05 ounces, which is very precise. It also includes a useful tare button, so you can weigh ingredients in a container. You place the bowl on the scales, press the tare button, then add your ingredients – the scale automatically adjusts so it weighs only the ingredients.
This food scale only shows weight in grams, ounces and pounds. Those units are good enough for most home recipes. If you need to measure in fluid ounces and milliliters, consider a scale like the Ozeri Touch II.
The circular, glass weighing platform measures a bit more than 35 square inches. While that certainly isn’t the largest weighing area we encountered, it’s enough space to weigh nearly any ingredient you need for a home-cooked meal. In addition, you can take off the glass surface to clean it.
Like other scales, the Epicurean Digital Kitchen Scale has an auto shutoff feature, so it powers itself off after sitting idle for two minutes. This helps preserve the four AAA batteries that power it.
