Total 3D Home Design Deluxe 11 Review

Total 3D Home Design Deluxe has enough features to make it worthy of a spot in our home design software comparison, but it can be difficult to use at times and is missing some design tools.

Our Verdict

This is good software for a beginning home designer. It’s inexpensive and has tools that help novice designers get started, but the program has low-quality graphics and 3D renderings that are prone to malfunction.

  • This home design software has an extensive library of objects and sample plans.

  • The navigation tools, like the 3D walkthroughs, are more difficult than they should be.

Total 3D Home Design Deluxe has enough features to make it worthy of a spot in our home design software comparison, but it can be difficult to use at times and is missing some design tools. There are many sample plans to choose from to help you get started on a floor plan, or you can build a plan from scratch. This software also has room templates that feature predesigned rooms you can use to decorate any room in your home.

One of this floor planner’s standout features is its large selection of sample floor plans. More than 1,000 sample floor plans are available in this application, which is enough options to help you create your perfect home. There are also editable room templates you can use to quickly furnish your home. To put your home design together, you can click on a room template, drag it to the appropriate location on your plan and then resize it to match your desired dimensions. It's fast and simple.

Compared to the rest, this program is the hardest to learn and use. It scored a C+ in our ease-of-use tests. The easiest application we encountered was Virtual Architect Ultimate, which scored an A+.

This floor plan software also comes with a cost estimator. The cost estimator keeps track of the cost of materials you plan to use in your home, so you stay on budget and know what the project financially entails before you invest time, effort and money into it.

Total 3D Home Design Deluxe has a library of thousands of objects. These objects are diverse, and there are items for every room in your home. There are 22 plants, mostly consisting of potted and indoor plants, but also trees and garden flowers that you can use for landscaping.

The object and plant libraries are competitive with the other programs on our site, though they aren’t as extensive as the best. You’ll find any window, door, appliance, bathroom fixture and piece of furniture you need. The plant library is quite extensive with 4,600 different plants, trees and shrubs for you to landscape your property. The library also includes a variety of cabinet combinations to help you design a bathroom or kitchen.

This program doesn’t produce quality floor plans like other products we reviewed. The 2D floor plan uses symbols that are overly simplistic, and the design tools are less comprehensive, leaving the user wanting more. The tool panel sits on the left side of the screen, where you can build walls, windows, doors, fireplaces and stairs. However, the tools are limited. For example, the wall tool is not capable of building curved walls.

We found that the 3D display tools did not work correctly in our testing; there were several missing walls and items, as well as incomplete images. The navigation tools in the software are not as easy to use as those in other home design software we reviewed. We had difficulty seeing different angles and inside the home using the program’s click-and-drag method, and there were malfunctions that erased walls, and at one point, the entire house.

It took quite a while for us to figure out how to adjust the materials, colors and look of objects like cabinets, countertops and refrigerators. Since we couldn’t find the properties for modifications of other objects we worked on, we had to come up with creative ways of finding colors and textures that were a match. Creating a consistent design, therefore, was challenging and took quite a bit of time.

If you experience any problems or have a hard time getting used to this floor plan software, Total 3D Home Design Deluxe has several support resources. Email and telephone support are available if you wish to communicate directly with a customer support representative. There are also FAQs and video tutorials available on the company’s website to help you along the way.

Total 3D Home Design Deluxe had some usability issues during testing which prevented it from competing with the best home design programs. There are many home and room templates to get novice users started, and the cost estimator helps you plan for home renovation. This inexpensive software is a good tool to get novice designers started on a project, but figuring out the quirks of the program will take some extra time.
