The Nest Hello is one of the best video doorbells around and it just keeps getting smarter.

As announced by Google in a recent blog post, the Nest Hello's latest update gives it the ability to see when you have a package delivered.

The new feature is rolling out now in the US and will send eligible users a notification on the Nest app get a parcel dropped off – and when it gets picked up.

It's great news for people who aren't always home for deliveries and worry about their parcels being stolen.

That said, there are a couple of things you should note before ordering a fancy new gas grill in time for the Labor Day weekend.

Staying aware

We say that the new Nest Hello update is available to 'eligible users' because you'll need a Nest Aware subscription if you want to keep an eye on all of your Amazon drop-offs from afar.

That will set you back $100 a year but comes with a host of other benefits, including the ability to continuously record up to 30-days worth of video from your doorbell – another great deterrent against thieves and a decent alternative to the best outdoor security cameras if you're after an all-in-one security solution.

You may also need to configure your Nest Hello in the right way to get the most out of its new package tracking feature.

As front doorsteps and porches vary dramatically in their size and overall make up, you're advised to use the 'Activity Zone' option available to Nest Aware subscribers, which lets you set up custom motion detection areas – in this case, for the place where you typically have deliveries left.

Nest will sometimes do this automatically, but it's worth double checking just to be sure.
