When I picture a perfect robot vacuum, I see a cleaning machine that ensures a spotless home with minimal effort on my part. It should effortlessly clean up after itself, memorize your home layout, and, ideally, be voice or app-controlled. So how does Ecovacs' newest robot vacuum, the Deebot X2 Omni robot vacuum, and mop, measure up to this ideal?

The Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni boasts an all-new squared profile that helps pick up debris in corners and a fully automated all-in-one cleaning station. The vacuum has 8000Pa suction power and a 15mm intelligent mop lifting function that enhances cleaning efficiency. The cleaning station has a hot water mopping feature to ensure that the mopping pads are always clean and ready to use. The robot vacuum features various cleaning modes and suction/scrubbing power options and can tell the difference between hardwood floors and carpets.

With this impressive resume, I was excited to test the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni to see if it truly offers the hands-off and high-tech experience ECOVACS says it does. After extensive testing of all its vacuum and mopping modes, the robot vacuum proved to be very hand-off in maintenance but not very efficient in the cleaning department. While suitable for light cleaning, it doesn't replace traditional vacuums for deep cleaning.

The Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni robot vacuum and mop excelled with its stellar self-cleaning station, extensive cleaning modes, and detailed app but left much to be desired with the actual vacuuming and mopping. You can take a look at our best robot vacuums and best vacuum cleaners guides for more.

Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni: Price & availability

Retailing at $1,499.99 on the ECOVACS website, the Ecovacs Deebot x2 Omni can also be purchased on Amazon at a discounted $1,159.99.

It's is a redesigned version of ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 OMNI Robot Vacuum ($899.99), improving the original by changing its shape to a square, adding mopping capabilities and hot water mop washing and drying, raising the suction power (8000Pa vs 5000Pa) and improving the laser navigation.

While the cleaning station and app technology are very impressive, the actual cleaning quality of the robot vacuum makes its price point too high for what it offers.

Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni: Setup

Setting up the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni might seem daunting initially, but it was surprisingly straightforward. The device arrived in a sturdy cardboard box, and I had to dispose of substantial packaging materials. I was pleased that the inner flaps provided a clear overview of the box contents and offered simple setup instructions. But ultimately, I did need to consult the detailed manual to successfully start using the robot vacuum.

Before using the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni Robot Vacuum and Mop, I attached the side brush to the bottom and connected the base to the cleaning station. For those who don’t know, the side brush helps pull debris into the main brush's reach, and the base serves as a ramp for the robot vacuum to enter the cleaning station. I downloaded the accompanying app by scanning the QR code beneath the vacuum's top cover, but the manual also includes the app's name. Before registering the robot vacuum on the app, I had to switch on the cleaning station and the robot vacuum.

During its first operation, the robot mapped several rooms in my home, intelligently identifying and labeling the different areas accordingly. Although it might initially appear to miss some areas, its mapping route will vary from its cleaning path. Once my home was mapped, I established different cleaning routines for each room. For example, the kitchen always has a vacuum/mop session. Overall, it was a straightforward setup process with no hiccups.

Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni: Design

The Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni has a modern and sleek design that is not out of place in a contemporary home. It takes up quite a lot of space, which is to be expected due to the multiple capabilities the cleaning station offers. The robot vacuum is 12.5 x 3.7 x 14 inches, and when it’s not cleaning, it lives inside the charging station (15 x 21 x 17.5 inches). You can purchase the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop in white or black, whatever color suits your home’s aesthetic.

One of its most impressive features, the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop’s cleaning station, serves multiple purposes: charging the robot, collecting debris, supplying water for mopping, and storing dirty water. To ensure it’s operating at full capacity, you must add water to the clean water tank before initiating the vacuum. The cleaning station also houses a tank to collect dirty water.

After vacuuming and/or mopping, the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop will make its way back to the cleaning station and automatically empty the debris collected into a dust bag into the station and, if it is mopped, the machine will also commence a mopping pad cleaning.

The DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop laser navigation is embedded into the robot's edges, enhancing accuracy, range, mapping speed, and response time. The robot vacuum also uses the technology from self-driving cars and previous ECOVACS models. A function that stood out to me was the anti-drop sensor, which came in handy since I have a couple of stairs leading into my living room.

You can control the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop in various ways. The most hands-off way is by voice control, but a runner-up is through the app. If this technology intimidates you, you can always click buttons on the robot vacuum and cleaning station to initiate cleaning and maintenance sessions.

I was very impressed with the detail that went into the section of the app that controls the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop. The app allows you to alternate between different maps, which is necessary for my home since I technically have two floors. You can also view these maps in 2D or 3D form and watch your vacuum’s cleaning POV through its built-in camera. Aside from vacuuming and mopping, this robot vacuum allows you to control it remotely, take pictures and videos, and call it to project your voice. It even has a patrol mode, useful for surveilling your home while you are away.

Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni: Performance

The DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop stands out due to its exceptional customizability in vacuuming and mopping functions. On the app, I can initiate a vacuuming or mopping session, a session where the robot vacuums and mops simultaneously, and a session where it vacuums the area and then follows up by mopping. There are four modes for vacuuming: quiet, standard, strong, and max+. The three water flow modes for mopping are low, medium, and high. If you want to remove a more stubborn stain, you can activate Deep Scrubbing, which increases mopping intensive scrubbing. In quiet mode, the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop registers 56dB and 70dB at its loudest mode, max+. When emptying the dustbin, it registers 75dB.

When it comes to a light, maintenance vacuum, and mopping, the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop is all you need. I tested out all cleaning preferences and modes and found that I liked to use the vacuum/mop option in my kitchen with the vacuum power on max+ and the water flow on high because it tends to be a high-traffic area with messes. For my living room, I mostly used the vacuum mode on strong and occasionally would have the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop do a mopping session.

I tested the efficiency of the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop at picking up different types of debris: caster sugar, sprinkles, and oats. Unfortunately, the robot vacuum did not perform very well at picking up bigger messes. While it was able to pick up the sprinkles and oats on the first pass, it left behind undetected lines of debris, forcing me to finish the job with my cordless vacuum. Vacuuming the caster sugar was a complete disaster. The DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop failed to pick up even half of the grains, and the side brush spread the sugar around the kitchen floor even more. On its way back to the cleaning station, the robot vacuum rolled through my entryway, leaving a trail of sugar.

I learned quickly that the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop was also not meant to mop up big spills. To test the effectiveness of its mopping capabilities, I spilled some orange juice on my kitchen floor. I engaged in Deep Scrubbing mode and raised the water flow level to high. Instead of cleaning up the spill, the robot vacuum spread the orange juice over a bigger surface area, which, when dried, made for a very sticky kitchen floor.

One of the major selling points of the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop is its “brand new square and compact design that brings edge-to-edge cleanliness tailored to your everyday needs.” Its new square shape is supposed to help get to those hard-to-reach corners. I found that this was true regarding dust and the everyday debris build-up. But during my oats test, the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop left most of the oats untouched in one of my kitchen corners.

The DEEBOT X2 OMNI robot vacuum cleaner and mop isn't as effective as advertised at cleaning up messes bigger than dust particles

I was not surprised that it was almost hands-off when it came to maintaining the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop. The cleaning station sucks out the debris collected by the robot vacuum in a dust bag that is easily removed from the station. Before mopping, the cleaning station will fill the robot vacuum with clean water and remove and store the dirty water after the session. Adding water to the clean water tank and removing the dirty water from the other tank is as easy as opening the cleaning station lid and removing/replacing both tanks. The cleaning station will also wash and dry the mops after a mopping station.

Even though the day-to-day maintenance was hands-off, I still had to remove hair from the rubber brush and side brush underneath the robot vacuum. You should also wipe down the outside of the robot vacuum and cleaning station to prevent bacteria build-up. The dust bin within the robot vacuum can be removed, too, so you can clean the filter by rinsing it with water and letting it dry before reinserting it. ECOVACS recommends you replace the mopping pads (about every 1-2 months).

Buy it if...

 Don’t buy it if...

You don’t have space to spare

You are looking for a robot vacuum that can get to those hard-to-reach corners every time

How does the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni Robot Vacuum and Mop compare?

Compared to other robot vacuums with mopping capabilities that also have a self-emptying station, the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum, and Mop was on the expensive side. The Yeedi Mop Station Pro is currently on sale and retails for $499.99 (compared to the DEEBOT X2’s $1,499.99 SRP) and offers similar functions. While the Yeedi Mop Station Pro does have a station that cleans the mops and stores both clean and dirty water, the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop advanced app, and a variety of cleaning options explain the higher tag. For instance, its max 8000Pa suction power surpasses Yeedi’s version at 5100Pa.

Comparing the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop to another model closer in price range, the Narwal Freo Versatile Self Mop Clean Robot ($1,598.99, with a $700 off discount for Black Friday, running till the 26th Nov 2023) offers very similar features. Both robot vacuums have a cleaning station that houses two water tanks and a dustbin, charges the unit, and cleans the mopping pads after use. They have advanced apps and offer the same four cleaning modes.

How I tested the DEEBOT X2 OMNI

I used the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop for two weeks, testing all available modes. I used the vacuum to clean up the natural buildup of hair, debris, and dust and also tested it using controlled experiments with oats, sprinkles, and sugar. I cleaned hardwood floors and rugs with the DEEBOT X2 OMNI Robot Vacuum and Mop.
