The Whirlpool TU950QPXS trash compactor is made of smooth stainless steel and includes several useful features. However, it doesn’t have an odor filtering system, which is a welcome feature found on many other trash compactors.

The TU950QPXS is an under-counter garbage compactor, and you open it with your foot. This is useful when your hands are full of garbage bags you want to put in the machine.

The compactor’s controls are hidden behind the door, which makes the appliance look sleek. The controls are electronic, so they're easy to use. Also, since they're flush with the machine, they are easy to clean.

Thanks to the Whirlpool TU950QPXS’s anti-jamming system, if anything obstructs the ram’s path during the compression cycle, the machine senses it and reverses. The machine also has a side latch that drops the panel toward you, making it easy to remove compressed bags of trash – some of which can weigh 30 pounds or more. Not having to lift the heavy bags straight up and out of the machine can reduce strain on your back.

This Whirlpool model has a compaction ratio of 4-to-1, which means it can compact four bags of trash into the size of just one. If you don’t already have a compactor, the TU950QPXS will make a noticeable difference in how often you have to take out the trash. However, the machine’s ratio is a bit low compared to the industry standard of 5-to-1.

You control the compactor with a key knob on the interior – you kick the toe plate to open the machine, then turn the key knob to begin a cycle. You can also remove the key knob so curious children don't accidentally start the compactor. This Whirlpool machine doesn’t have a sustained compression cycle, so you have to run compaction more often than with other models.

The Whirlpool TU950QPXS doesn’t have an air filter or deodorizing system. When you compact your trash, you make fewer trips to the curb, which in turn means you keep trash in your home for longer than usual. Especially in hotter climates, the bin may start to smell, depending on the kinds of waste you throw away. Some garbage compactor have integrated fans or charcoal filters, but this model leaves odor neutralization up to you. You can minimize odors by not putting things like raw meat, fish, diapers or similarly pungent items into the compactor. If a deodorizing system is important to you, check out the KitchenAid KTTS505EPA – it costs the same and includes such a system.

This compactor only comes in one finish: stainless steel. While it complements most kitchens, other compactors come in a variety of colors. Some can even be covered with panels that match your cabinets to completely hide them from view.
