We felt a little like Goldilocks as we collected information for our webcam reviews – some offer too much, some offer too little – but Logitech's HD Webcam C525 is just about right. This unit has a collection of useful features that don't push the price or the physical size into a cumbersome range.

It starts with high-definition video quality, streaming at full 720p. It's not quite as nice as the 1080p cameras we looked at, but we are quite happy with the quality of video we got with this web camera. Stills resolution is quite nice too, at 8 megapixels.

Part of what goes into making the picture look right is Logitech's Fluid Crystal technology, an algorithm that adjusts frame rate, color and sharpness automatically to counteract the things that can ruin a good video, including poor lighting.

The effects are a lot of fun. Add some zany glasses to your face or let a shark avatar speak for you. The selection also includes a balloon hat, mullet, Santa mask, bug eyes, cat nose and much more. The effects add a way to personalize your internet calls in unique ways. Filter you and your surroundings to look like they are reflecting in a pool of water, written on a chalkboard or coming out of a comic book.

Set up is a breeze – just position the web camera, install the software and connect the camera to a USB port. We like how this unit can swivel a full 360 degrees. It also collapses into such a compact size and shape. You can easily slip it into your travel gear so you can stay in touch on even the longest of trips.

Logitech customer support is good but not perfect. We always prefer to have a live chat option, but we received good responses via email. The company also offers a telephone contact.

What we really want from a webcam is excellent video quality and worry-free communication with friends and family in a compact, affordable and fun package. Even with a few minor weaknesses, including the lack of wide-screen capture, Logitech delivers these things with the C525.
