Asus Q200 Review

Author by

PROS / The touchscreen is responsive and colorful, and it has a good low-light webcam.

CONS / The unit has limited battery life, especially for this type of small laptop.

VERDICT / The VivoBook Q200 has enough RAM, storage and CPU power to handle your daily activities of browsing the web and watching videos.

The Asus VivoBook Q200 budget netbook computer is much thinner than other small laptops on our lineup. It has a touchscreen that works great with Windows 8. Even though this device is thin and compact, it has almost half the battery life of other competing netbooks. This could be a setback if you find yourself away from the outlet for more than four or five hours. The Asus has plenty of ports and features great audio that is perfect for watching movies.

With the 1.4GHz dual-core processor, you can expect this mini laptop to handle many of your multitasking needs. The CPU stays cool, unless you really push the limits by playing some low-end 3D games. It utilizes Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics card, which isn't the newest in Intel's lineup but is a modest graphics card for budget-level notebooks.

These netbook computers have a 500GB standard hard drive with no option to upgrade. This isn't really a problem because many sites offer cloud storage, including Asus, which gives you 32GB. The base model has 4GB of RAM, but you can upgrade to 8GB, and to a 1.8GHz processor. We love the sound that this laptop puts out. It doesn't offer much when it comes to bass, but Netflix movies and movie previews play back in high-definition sound. You may find yourself charging the laptop a lot because the battery lasts only four and a half hours on one charge, even with medium use.

The display on the Q200 is a standard 1366-by-768-pixel resolution on an 11.6-inch glossy screen. Movies and images are sharp and colorful, and the screen has good viewing angles. The screen supports 10-point touch. This means you can draw with all 10 fingers at once, flip through tasks by swiping in from the left, and easily zoom in and out of photos.

The Asus Q200 has an SD card reader, audio in and three USB ports, two of which are USB 3.0. The HDMI and VGA ports are a great way to expand your display to standard and high-definition TVs or monitors. The 720p webcam displays accurate color, and the design works well in low-light situations.

Asus backs its Q200 with a one-year warranty on parts and labor. Overall, we found the support to be helpful, though we waited longer than normal when chatting or on phone calls. That's why we recommend going to the company's service site. Here you can find forums, downloads and authorized repair locations while skipping the wait for online chat and hold times on the phone.

The Asus Q200 is a small netbook meant for travel. If it had a bit more endurance with battery life, it would be a premium model. It has plenty of storage to hold a large chunk of your movies, music and photos. You can even upgrade from 4GB to 8GB of memory. Of all our netbook reviews, the Q200 is a great option if you aren't in need of a high-powered machine.
