Let's Find The Right Wide Format Printers and Plotters Service For You

Pros / Xerox’s Wide Format is the fastest color-capable printer on our lineup.

Cons / Because of its dye-based ink and limitations on media thickness, the IJP 2000 is impractical if you have outdoor or otherwise exotic print needs.

Verdict / The Xerox IJP 2000 is built for big and fast printing. While it isn't the best printer for other tasks, with speed and capacity at its side, it can make incredibly short work of enterprise-style jobs.

You would expect to see Xerox’s Wide Format IJP 2000 at a big corporation, a defense contractor, or a volume-focused print shop with a lot of enterprise and advertising clients. Designed with speed and efficiency in mind, the IJP 2000 trades the flexibility of longer-lasting inks and thicker media compatibility for supersized capacity and blistering output. If you’re looking to serve up thick polypropylene banners or printed cardstock, we’d recommend other devices on our lineup. If, on the other hand, your print needs are more straightforward – a run of brochures on glossy paper, a series of ads for backlit indoor display, or other similar tasks – this large-format printer could be your company’s dream machine.

The Xerox is beastly sized. It weighs almost 900 pounds and can hold up to four 42-inch media rolls at once. At draft quality, its print head can output paper at 6 inches a second, reaching 4,520 square feet per hour. Its 1600 x 1600 dpi print resolution is the best in its price category, though to make full use of that potential, you’ll have to slow down your prints significantly. We did review a few printers with higher resolutions, but they all have unbalanced pixel densities – tighter in one direction than the other. The IJP 2000 has the highest square density we’ve seen from any wide-format printer.

Of course, there are some downsides to the Xerox, and they start with its ink. The IJP 2000 uses dye-based inks for printing, which are water soluble and prone to fading over time. Dye ink works on just about any media, so you could theoretically print on whatever you like, whether that's simple bond or recycled paper, fabric, or polypropylene. However, the printer itself is limited to stock no thicker than 0.178 mm. Between the thickness limitations and the ink, the Xerox is best suited to indoor-friendly products like brochures, corporate publications, signs or advertisements.

The IJP 2000 isn’t compatible with Macs, but it does have a 500GB hard drive on board, so you can network it and send it massive large-format printing jobs without tying it to a dedicated computer. You can also pair it with an optional scanner to add multifunction capability and, if you’re willing to pay for the upgrade, add an in-line cutter.

Xerox is a major name in the world of printing, so it’s no surprise that the company offers such a powerful, capable machine under its brand. Although the IJP 2000 is best suited to enterprise applications, its rapid turnaround times and impressive roll capacity point to another use case: any business that needs to run high-quality prints for indoor use, day and night.
