The VTech Kidizoom Action Cam is different from everything else that we reviewed in that it's oriented more toward recording video than capturing stills. This, of course, affects how kids will use the camera, as well as its ergonomics and aesthetics. Despite it looking much different from other VTech cameras, the operation is similar: simple, straightforward and easy to figure out.

This being an action camera, however, kids can use it in ways that they can't use the other cameras on our lineup. Most notably, it comes with waterproof housing and a series of mounts that you can use to attach it to bikes, skateboards, scooters and more. In contrast to the other cameras on our lineup, which kids have to set down before they engage in another activity, the Action Cam encourages kids to be more active and document their adventures with a convenient, mountable camera.

In addition to this benefit, the Kidizoom Action Cam is more durable, engaging and easy to use than most other kids' cameras. It boasts a hearty, rubberized exterior, quality games and activities, simple menus, and well-marked buttons. Although its compact form factor makes for a smaller screen and more condensed controls, it's one of the most intuitive cameras that we reviewed. For this reason, the VTech Kidizoom Action Cam is our Top Ten Reviews Silver Award winner.

For an action camera, durability is always the most important factor to consider, and in many cases, it's just a given. If you're buying a camera that you can strap to a bike or skateboard, it only makes sense that said camera be able to stand up to few crashes. As you might expect, the Kidizoom Action Cam meets these durability expectations and is in fact the most durable camera that we reviewed.

A thick rubber border encompasses the entire camera, providing shock absorption as well as resistance to scratches and nicks. This bumper has two integrated silicone flaps, which conceal a micro-SD port for expanded storage and a micro-USB port for charging and image transfer. A rubberized border also protects the lens, which protrudes slightly from the camera body.

In addition to these safeguards, the Kidizoom Action Cam comes with waterproof housing, which increases shock resistance in addition to its obvious benefit of protecting against water damage. This housing not only protects the camera, but also allows kids to use the camera safely in up to 6 feet of water.

The Kidizoom Action Cam is the only camera on our lineup that features a rechargeable battery, a feature that will doubtlessly save you time and money. The internal storage is also pretty good, offering space for about 600 images – 50 more than the category average. If that's not enough, the micro-SD slot makes it easy to get more.

This camera is smaller than others in the Kidizoom line to facilitate its role as an action camera. As a result, it has a smaller screen and fewer and smaller controls than VTech's other Kidizoom cameras. This makes playing games, browsing images and navigating menus a little more difficult than its Kidizoom siblings do, though it still manages to surpass the majority of other camera brands.

This is one of the most fun cameras that we reviewed. Although it lacks some of the games found in other VTech models, it makes up for this with its mounting system. Kids are not tethered to the camera in order to have fun with it. They can apply it to any number of activities.

Because the camera is video-specific, the resolution of still images taken with it is somewhat lower than the category average – 0.3 megapixels versus 1.3. While neither of these numbers are particularly praiseworthy, this means that still images have less detail than those taken with many of the other options on our lineup. While this shouldn't make a huge difference in day-to-day use, it's important to consider if you need more pixels.

Despite cutbacks in other areas, the Kidizoom Action Cam offers a good selection of in-camera editing effects. These allow kids to insert themselves into silly scenes, or overlay images of their friends with props and special effects. This feature was consistently popular among our test group and often had kids laughing with delight.

Help & Support

The warranty for the Kidizoom is the same as any VTech camera in our review. VTech guarantees each camera to be free of defects and offers a warranty for 90 days after the date of purchase. This isn't the longest warranty in our review by a long shot, but in combination with its exceptional build quality, we still think it's the most reliable option.

If you have any questions regarding your camera, you have several avenues available to you for finding answers. You can consult your user manual, which is provided with the camera, or contact VTech support via phone or email.
