Video/Image Quality

This camera can record videos in 1080p, which is commonly called full HD. This format is generally considered the standard in high-definition cameras and displays. Although there are some 4K camcorders on the market, none of them qualify as pocket camcorders. Unless you're one of the few to own a 4K display, 1080p is all the resolution you'll need.

The DV1 records in 1080p at 30 fps, and it can also record in 720p at 60 fps. You should use the latter setting for recording action sequences. The rate of 60 fps captures more of the detail in fast motions. Additionally, 60 fps allows you to play back some of your recordings in slow motion if you have access to basic video-editing software.

The camcorder has image stabilization, which allows it to compensate slightly for camera shake as you film. This is a feature boasted only by the best pocket camcorders. It does, however, lack a flash, so you'll have to confine your filming to well-lit conditions.

This pocket camera has a 4x zoom, but it's digital instead of optical. This means that the zoom merely enlarges the pixels that the sensor has already captured. When you zoom in, you'll notice an almost immediate degradation of image quality, so it's best to only use the zoom when you absolutely need to.

The DV1 can take still photos as well as video. The still photos have a resolution of 5 megapixels, which is about average for a pocket camcorder.

Design

This small video camera is about 4 inches tall and 2 inches wide. It's rather shallow, at less than an inch deep, so it fits easily into your pocket. One of the camera's best features is a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, so you can avoid going to the store to purchase new AA batteries.

It has a 2.5-inch color LCD screen that you can use to frame a shot and adjust the camera's settings. This is the second-largest preview screen that we've seen on a pocket camcorder. It gives you a detailed image of what you're filming and the settings menus.

You use a series of rubberized buttons and controls to navigate the menus. The best pocket camcorder on the market has a touch interface, but the DV1 just has these buttons.

The best design feature of the DV1 is undoubtedly its ruggedness. It's waterproof for up to 16 feet, which allows you to film in a swimming pool, the ocean or anywhere else where you want to film underwater. It's also shockproof for a drop of up to five feet. Even if you're tall, the camera should be able to withstand drops from your filming hand.

Memory/Ports

The DV1 uses an SD card to store videos and pictures. Although you can eject the SD card and insert it directly into a computer in order to upload videos, the DV1 has a clever design feature that allows you to skip that step. A USB arm folds out from the camera, and you can transfer image files directly to your computer using that USB connection. This built-in USB arm also allows you to charge the camera.

The camera can accept an SD card with up to 32GB of storage. That allows for a few hours of recording time, much longer than the battery will actually last (around 40 minutes).

Help & Support

GE has good customer service, especially compared to other pocket camcorder companies. Its representatives are easy to get in touch with and have a decent knowledge of the product.

The company offers phone and email support. It has a social media team, which is often the best way to get in touch with a customer service team. It offers a one-year warranty, which is the industry average for a pocket camcorder.

Summary

The GE DV1 is one of the best pocket camcorders on the market. It's exceedingly tough and has well above-average image quality. It's not one of the most affordable pocket camcorders we reviewed, but its quality compensates for its price tag.
