PROS / You pay no startup costs to get a home security system from this company.
CONS / The system lacks an alert for natural gas leaks.
VERDICT / Protect America's monthly fees are somewhat higher than the average we reviewed, but its wireless equipment is easy to install yourself.
Huge down payments often prevent homeowners from installing home security systems, rendering their homes vulnerable to threats like fire or intrusion. Protect America avoids hefty startup fees by building the cost of its home surveillance systems into its monthly fees. This means monthly operating costs are slightly higher than average, but many homeowners prefer this to paying upfront for a security system.
Your contract with Protect America lasts three years, and you must pay the full balance if you cancel early.
Protect America offers five different security packages with each plan including security decals and a yard sign. Each plan varies as far as how many security devices are included. For example, the basic package includes a control panel, three door and window sensors, a motion detector (which ignores pets up to 40 pounds thereby avoiding false alarms), three window decals and a yard sign. The four ascending security packages cost more and include extra equipment. In addition, you can customize your system with extra security devices.
Protect America’s packages center on the GE Simon XT, a wireless control panel, which you can install yourself. This works with a variety of door and window sensors, glass-break sensors, sirens and recessed door sensors. This allows you to create a security perimeter to protect your family and belongings. Protect America also offers cameras that can be accessed remotely using a mobile app and by adding a video feature to your service agreement.
In addition, you can augment the system with an array of alerts that warn you about environmental and life threats. These include specialized sensors and alerts for smoke, fire, carbon monoxide, temperature change, flood and power failure. However, you will need to add these alerts individually as part of your service agreement. Unfortunately, Protect America does not offer an alert for natural gas leaks.
If you have any problems, Protect America provides support via telephone, email and live chat. Customer service is only available during normal business hours. You also can consult online resources, which include a troubleshooting section, FAQs and a history of your home's alarms and alerts. You can move the equipment if you relocate, and Protect America's equipment comes with a lifetime warranty.
Protect America can efficiently guard against intrusion and other hazardous situations in your home, and it offers easy, self-installable systems. In exchange for waiving the initial fee, the monthly cost of Protect America's home security systems is higher than most comparable systems. However, the difference in price may well be worth paying. The extensive range of packages, security devices and professional support make this company a worthy competitor on our lineup.
