TopTenREVIEWS - Bronze Award - Awarded for excellence in design, usability and feature set

Schlage Connect is a smart lock that integrates with other smart home technology. This lock has some noteworthy features for security and convenience, as well as an excellent warranty. This alone is enough for it to earn our Top Ten Reviews Bronze Award for smart locks. Still, the lock has a drawback: It requires a smart home hub to enable some features.

Security

The primary strength of Schlage Connect is security – it outperforms the lower-ranked competition. This lock’s most unique security feature is a tamper alert that sounds anytime something disturbs the lock. This makes it the only lock in our review that can detect lock picking and sound an alarm. The lock also detects attempts at forced entry and has the option to deactivate the keypad when you're on vacation so even authorized codes don't work.

Schlage Connect meets the standards for ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, which is the highest security rating a digital door lock can receive. You can program the keypad with up to 30 different user codes, but it takes longer to create these codes than with other keypad smart locks in our review since you have to program the codes by hand. A home automation system can remedy this problem.

Convenience

Our tests revealed that Schlage Connect depends on other smart home tech to enable important convenience features. For example, we connected the lock to a Wink home automation system and found that the lock outperforms all other Z-Wave locks in our review. Guest access and remote access both work with smart homes, depending on the system you use. You can share codes with guests via text or email, though if you want to allow temporary access, you have to remove the code.

Schlage Connect does not require a smart home system to activate the auto-lock function, which locks your door 30 seconds after it unlocks in case you forget. This feature is not active by default but is easy to enable with a simple keypad command. Schlage Connect doesn't have an auto-unlock feature, which adds to its overall security.

Design

Schlage Connect is not a self-contained smart door lock, which means it doesn't have a dedicated mobile app or Bluetooth connection. Instead, it relies on a smart home hub to fulfill these roles. This is a disadvantage when compared to locks that only need a smartphone. Schlage Connect replaces your existing deadbolt and comes in two styles: the modern Century or traditional Camelot, which meet different aesthetic preferences.

There are six finishes available for Schlage Connect: satin nickel, matte black, bright chrome, aged bronze, satin chrome and bright brass. The last two finishes are only available on the Century and Camelot styles respectively. The finish selection is better than most smart locks in our review. Schlage Connect's four AA batteries last for around 12 months.

Control

The Schlage Connect’s main control feature is a built-in Z-Wave chip. This allows the lock to communicate with smart home systems. Other control features, such as an iOS app, an Android app and an integrated video doorbell, are available if you meet the automation system requirement.

Warranty & Support

Schlage offers an excellent warranty on the Connect, covering the electronics for three years. This warranty term is better than that of most smart locks, which typically have a one-year warranty. The finish and mechanical components have a lifetime warranty. You can find FAQs and video tutorials on Schlage's support website, which also gives you telephone and email contact information for support. Schlage doesn't offer live chat support.

Summary

Schlage Connect is one of the best smart locks for home automation systems. It has an excellent warranty and dependable security features. If you want a smart lock that works with your smartphone without other smart home tech, you may want to consider a different lock. Nevertheless, this lock is exceptional whether or not it's part of a smart home.
