Pros / WinZip Driver Updater quickly scans and identifies the second-largest number of drivers out of the programs in our review, ensuring that you find and update critical out-of-date drivers.
Cons / The software has a few unavoidable pop-up and nag ads, which are annoying.
Verdict / WinZip is efficient and effective driver update software, but it still lacks some basic, critical functions.
WinZip Driver Updater can identify and automatically update many of your system's drivers. The software even lets you schedule scans and back up your drivers. However, the interface, while easy to use, has some annoying features and omissions.
As we tested the software, we were impressed to see that WinZip identified the second-highest quantity of drivers on our test PC: 111 out of 277. While there is an undeniable discrepancy there, the efficiency is still noteworthy, even compared to the best driver updaters. The software also displays basic driver source information, including the version details.
WinZip Driver Updater is one of the easiest and most intuitive driver updater software programs we tested. After scanning, the software offers a one-click fix button, which automatically downloads and installs your driver updates. This feature is ideal for novice computer users and those who just don't want to deal with the hassle. We did not see a guarantee of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) updates within the software, though, which means it may not download the ideal update to your system.
The software also gives you the option to back up and restore drivers. This is handy if you are worried about a faulty driver update, and it's simply nice to have in case any major issues happen with your computer, as it can generally restore your computer to a previous state. It gives you the option to schedule periodic system scans, so you don't have to remember to do so manually. The exclusion option lets you choose which drivers to update and which to leave for a future update, though the software doesn't seem to have an uninstall option for old drivers you don't need. Unfortunately, the software does have nag and pop-up ads for WinZip products, which is annoying, unlike the best driver update software.
You have a few technical support options through WinZip, though not as many as some manufacturers make available. The only way to contact the company directly is via email, which means you may have to wait a bit for a reply. However, the site has a decent knowledgebase, which counters the lack of direct support methods a bit. The software is compatible on Windows 8, 7 and XP, so it's a little behind on that front.
Though WinZip Driver Updater lacks an OEM guarantee and an uninstall option, which are fairly significant features, the software did detect the second-largest number of drivers of any updater on our lineup. We like that it is so easy to use, but we were disappointed by its pop-up ads, limited customer support options and lack of modern operating system compatibility.
