A few devices set the standard for infrared camera performance. The Fluke Ti400 is one of these. The Ti400 beats out most of the competition thanks to its excellent resolution, comprehensive feature set and included add-ons. Although it does have a few weaknesses, like its unusual file format, the Ti400 is one of the best thermal imagers we've reviewed and our pick for the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award.

Imaging is the most important aspect to consider when you're comparing infrared cameras. After all, every other feature of your camera depends on it. What good is built-in Wi-Fi if you can't even capture clear images?

Fortunately, this isn't an issue for the Ti400, which comes with a 320 x 240-pixel thermal imaging sensor. This is the highest resolution in our lineup. It means you can get better definition, detail and clarity in a wider variety of situations than you would with most other infrared cameras.

The Ti400 also features an onboard 5-megapixel digital camera you can use to capture normal images at the same time you capture infrared ones. The Fluke can combine these images, overlaying thermal information atop the standard image. You can also capture standard images separately and use them to add context to your current project.

To ensure that these high-res infrared images come out looking sharp, the camera is equipped with an autofocus system. In certain situations, however, it's nice to focus manually. Thankfully, you can deactivate the autofocus if you want to take control.

The Ti400 has one major flaw in its imaging performance. The issue is file format. Rather than utilizing radiometric JPGs, which can open on nearly any platform, the Fluke uses its proprietary IS2 format to store thermal data. While this doesn't affect the actual quality of your images, because clients and coworkers who don't have Fluke's software can't open the files, it does make them more difficult to share.

Thermal Precision

Like other top infrared cameras, this device is sensitive to gradations of 0.05 degrees Celsius. This means it detects all but the smallest differences in temperature. Other cameras on our lineup are generally sensitive to differences of 0.06, 0.07 or 0.15 degrees Celsius.

When it comes to temperature range, however, Fluke's cameras are in a class of their own. Competitors offer at best -20 to 650 degrees Celsius. While that range is still large, it doesn't come close to Fluke's massive -20 to 1,200 degree range. So if your line of work requires you to measure subjects at extreme temperatures, you know which camera to reach for.

Auxiliary Features

This camera has all of the features we expect to see in a high-end infrared camera. Using built-in Wi-Fi, you can connect this camera to your phone or tablet and transfer images for quick organizing and sharing. Its video capturing tools allow you to film temperature changes in real time, which is a useful way to illustrate problems.

Other features include an illuminator lamp, text and voice annotation, and a laser pointer. While these features may seem simple, they can really help when it comes to capturing a subject effectively and noting specifics for later review.

Battery Life & Design

Like most thermographic cameras, The Ti400 offers up to four hours of shooting on a single charge. It also comes with an extra battery and an external charger. And since charging only takes 2.5 hours, you can always stay ahead of battery issues.

The overall construction of the camera is solid, with safeguards against water, dust and drops. In addition to this, there's a touchscreen for easy navigation of menus and settings. If you like to wear gloves, that's no problem; all of the usual physical controls are present as well.
