Pros / It has unique special effects filters you can add to your photos.
Cons / It doesn’t come with batteries or a microSD card.
Verdict / The Ivation 20MP is a basic waterproof camera that lacks key features, though it is quite affordable.
The Ivation 20MP is one of the most inexpensive waterproof cameras on the market and in our comparison. This underwater camera is one of the smallest and lightest of the bunch. It only weighs 10.2 ounces. The small size makes it easy to pack in a suitcase or carry in your pocket when you’re at the beach. However, it lacks nearly all of the standard and premium features you’d expect from a waterproof camera.
The 20MP is rated to handle depths 10 feet below water. While this is sufficient for most pools and shallow beach areas, it’s nowhere near the depths some cameras in our comparison can reach, like the Nikon W300, which can dive down to 100 feet. The manufacturer also claims that the camera is dustproof and shockproof but doesn’t provide specific measurements, so take extra caution when using this. These specs are disappointing but on par for such an inexpensive camera.
The Ivation 20MP didn’t fare well in our underwater or dry-land image tests. The camera was submerged in a large fish tank to capture images of our underwater test scene. The images the 20MP captured were not as vibrant, clear or appealing as the best cameras in our comparison. The test scene in our tests consistently looked blurry and discolored. The camera also lacks an auto-focus option and has a slight delay before taking the photo once the button is depressed.
The dry-land test photos for this camera featured a lot of grain (noise), especially when you zoom in, as the 20MP only gives you a 4x digital zoom option. In fact, the entire image looks somewhat fuzzy, especially on black and white shots. The lines between differing colors were not sharp and grays especially looked muddy. This camera simply doesn’t take sharp pictures.
The Ivation 20MP only captures video in 640 x 480 VGA resolution. Many of the other cameras we tested shoot in full HD if not 4K, so the fact that the Ivation isn’t anywhere near par is disappointing. The waterproof camera also doesn’t feature GPS, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity or have many other bells and whistles. There is no image stabilizer, no included battery or microSD card, no scene modes and no burst shot or panorama mode options.
The camera feels and looks cheap, from its casing to the buttons. Though its comfortable to hold during one-handed use and its simple software is easy enough to navigate, it wasn’t near the experience we had with the top-rated cameras.
