Pros / It has high airflow and can cool large spaces.

Cons / The unit is missing convenient features like a remote control and automatic shutoff timer.

Verdict / The Hessaire MC18M is an excellent, surprisingly energy efficient option for cooling a large space.

Hessaire generally makes portable evaporative coolers for large outdoor spaces, but the Hessaire MC18M is small enough to use in your home. The unit itself looks quite utilitarian, and it’s more efficient than many other coolers we looked at. It's one of the more affordable models from Hessaire, costing around $175 at the time of publishing this review, though that is higher than the $150 average price of the coolers we reviewed.

The Hessaire MC18M is an excellent portable swamp cooler for large spaces, especially outdoors. It has a high airflow rating of 1,300 cubic feet per minute (CFM), so it can cool an area up to 500 square feet. This is enough power to cool multiple bedrooms, though it is too strong for a single small bedroom.

The unit is surprisingly energy efficient, using only 82 watts of power. For comparison, the Luma Comfort EC110S can only cool half as much space as the MC18M and uses 110 watts. We estimate that using the Hessaire MC18M over three months will add around $7 to your electric bill.

Powerful outdoor evaporative coolers like this one are often very heavy, but the MC18M weighs only 16 pounds when empty. However, it weighs over 50 pounds when the water tank is full, so it's good the unit has wheels to make it easier to move around. Once it’s in place, the wheels lock to keep the cooler from rolling away.

This Hessaire evaporative cooler has a large, 4.8-gallon water tank. You can also attach the unit to a garden hose and run it continuously, without having to refill the water tank. This hose hookup also makes the MC18M an ideal candidate for cooling your patio or garage.

The unit’s controls are simple – you set the fan and pump speeds with a dial, and it doesn’t have an LED display. Unlike many portable evaporative cooling units, such as the Honeywell CS10XE, this Hessaire model doesn’t include a remote control or have an automatic shutoff timer, which makes it a little less user-friendly. However, its simple controls and garden hose hookup help make up for these shortcomings. As with other evaporative coolers we evaluated, this machine has a one-year warranty.
