Pros / This cooktop has an automatic reignition feature.
Cons / Its control knobs aren’t backlit.
Verdict / The Bosch 800 Series NGM8656UC is a well-designed, durable cooktop with a fine burner selection.
The Bosch 800 Series NGM8656UC is a versatile gas cooktop with a good mix of features. It includes a potent 19,000 Btu primary burner as well as two 12,000 Btu secondary burners. Another of the five burners reaches up to 10,000 Btu, and there is a simmer burner that goes as high as 5,500 Btu. That’s a bit high for a simmer burner, but it still works nicely for keeping cooked food warm or making sauces that require low heat.
This 36-inch Bosch cooktop has continuous cast iron grates, so you can slide heavy pots and pans from place to place instead of lifting them – a great safety feature since hefting a pot filled with hot food poses a burn risk. You can also remove the grates and clean them in your dishwasher.
The heavy-duty metal knobs sit front and center, and they make the cooktop feel solid and professional. The control panel has a red LED hot surface indicator so you know when the cooktop is on. However, the knobs are not backlit to let you know which specific burner is on. If that's important to you, check out the Thermador Masterpiece SGSX365FS.
The cooktop’s deep, recessed surface catches spills that might otherwise fall beneath it. Since it’s seamless, the surface is easy to wipe clean. All the burners are sealed as well, so it’s easy to keep the cooktop free of debris.
This Bosch model includes an automatic reignition feature, which reignites the flame if it goes out while you cook. The company includes an LP conversion kit with the cooktop, in case you fuel your home with liquid propane instead of gas.
You can buy a griddle separately from Bosch to whip up pancakes, quesadillas and hot sandwiches. Bosch also sells a metal wok ring that sits on top of the grates, in case you want to make Asian food in a wok. The Bosch 800 Series NGM8656UC cooktop comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
