The Whirlpool WFG540H0ES is a fairly standard gas range setup. The five-burner range is available in five colors, has an average size oven and is easy to cleanup and maintain. While the warranty is also just average, it’s priced competitively and features easy steam cleaning.
The primary burner, located in the front left corner, outputs up to 17,000 Btu of heat. The four additional burners include two midrange burners with outputs of 9,500 and 8,000 Btu, another hot 15,000 Btu burner, and a simmering 5,000 Btu burner. Each burner is a traditional circular, single layer. The cooktop is a porcelain coated steel for easy cleanup. The full-coverage continuous grates are porcelain-coated cast iron, and they can be thrown in the dishwasher for quick cleanup. The burners are all sealed, which prevents spills from falling below the cooktop surface. The cooktop doesn’t include a built-in griddle.
At 5.8 cubic feet, the oven is average size for ranges. The broiler is among the weakest of those we tested, only producing 10,000 Btus of heat. If you need more broiler heat, the Frigidaire Professional FPGF3077QF offers 13,500 Btus.
The oven can reach up to 550 degrees, which is optimal for some doughs and crusts; some of the other ranges we tested only reach 500 degrees. This convection range uses a fan to evenly distribute heat throughout the oven to ensure even baking on any of the included racks. There are seven available rack positions and two included racks. There isn’t a gliding rack, and the oven doesn’t have a proofing mode to raise dough.
One of the great features many newer gas ovens include is a steam self-clean cycle. Heat self-cleaning ovens tend to emit fumes and smoke, while using steam at lower temperatures loosens the baked-on food rather than turns it to ash. The WFG540H0ES has a control lock to keep kids from turn it on, and the drawer below the oven is for pot and pan storage. If you have plenty of storage space in your kitchen, then a range with a warming drawer may be a more efficient use of that space.
Whirlpool warranties the WFG540H0ES for one year. This protects against problems related to manufacturing and pays for defective parts and labor required to fix them. This is standard for gas ranges. Whirlpool customer service is easy to access. We quickly found a customer service agent by phone, and the company also offers email support and live chat for quick questions.
Whirlpool’s WFG540H0ES 5.8 cubic foot gas stove is an affordable and includes convection cooking and steam self-cleaning. While the burners and broiler aren’t as hot as other gas stoves we considered, it’s priced right and both the cooktop and oven are easy to clean up.
