Pros / Protect America provides a lifetime equipment warranty.
Cons / The company requires that you pay 100 percent of your remaining balance when you cancel early.
Verdict / Protect America is a great choice because its equipment is competitive in price with other systems and comes with a lifetime warranty. However, the company's cellular monitoring is just a bit more expensive than the competition.
Protect America can effectively guard against intrusion and other hazardous situations in your home, and it uses simple, self-installable systems. The monthly cost of its 24/7 monitoring service is higher than most comparable security systems. However, the difference in price may be well worth paying. The variety of packages, security devices and customer support the company offers make it a worthy competitor to larger home security companies, though the contract you sign is average for the industry, which is to say not very flexible.
This service has some of the lowest rates on landline security systems of any company we reviewed. However, we looked at cellular-connected systems, and Protect America’s cheapest option costs $41.99 a month; this is higher than the industry average of $37. Currently, Protect America has no startup fees listed on its website.
Your contract lasts three years, and you must pay the full balance if you cancel early. At the start of your contract, you have 14 days to cancel your service and return equipment to avoid fees. While this isn't the shortest equipment return policy we've seen, it's the shortest among home security systems you can self-install. For comparison, ADT gives you six months to return equipment. The contract automatically renews on a monthly basis when the initial period ends.
Protect America offers three different security packages, and each plan includes security decals and a yard sign. Each plan varies in the number of security devices it includes. For example, the basic package includes a control panel, three door and window sensors, and a motion detector that ignores pets up to 40 pounds, which limits false alarms. The two ascending security packages cost more and include extra entry sensors for your doors and windows.
If you have any problems, Protect America provides support via social media, telephone, email and live chat. Customer service is only available during normal business hours, but the company's weekend support hours give it an advantage over those that only offer weekday support. You also can consult online resources, which include a troubleshooting section, FAQs, and a history of your home's alarms and alerts. Protect America's equipment comes with a lifetime warranty – only half of the providers we reviewed match this.
Protect America’s packages center around a wireless control panel you can install yourself. It works with a variety of door and window sensors, glass-break sensors, sirens and recessed door sensors. The company also sells a camera you can access remotely using a mobile app, though you need to add a video feature to your service agreement.
In addition, you can augment the system with extra security devices that warn you about environmental and life threats. These include specialized sensors and alerts for smoke, fire, carbon monoxide, extreme temperature change, flood and power failure. However, you need to add these alerts individually as part of your service agreement. Protect America does not offer an alert for natural gas leaks.
