Pros / SimpliSafe does not require a contract for its monitoring service.

Cons / The service has limited integration with third-party smart home devices.

Verdict / SimpliSafe is an affordable, well-equipped home alarm system that doesn’t require a contract.

SimpliSafe operates on the idea that safety should be simple, not confusing. Its monitoring plans are among the most affordable among home security systems we reviewed, and it offers a wide variety of security equipment. SimpliSafe's home alarm system sports an impressive array of alerts, equipment and great customer support. If you are looking for a security system for your home without the burden of a contract, SimpliSafe is a great bet.

SimpliSafe offers two affordable home monitoring plans. Both plans include 24-hour monitoring services and a cellular connection, but neither one requires a contract, something that even the best home security systems do not offer, though LifeShield also offers a no-contract option. Since there isn’t a contract, you can cancel anytime without penalties, though you only have 60 days after purchase to return your equipment for a refund. If you are not ready to subscribe to a plan, you can buy equipment from SimpliSafe that can be used as a local alarm without professional monitoring.

We chose the Essentials package for our comparison, which is more expensive than comparable systems but only because you pay upfront for the equipment, about $260, and don't commit to a contract. The standard plan costs $14.99 a month and includes 24/7 live monitoring – your system notifies SimpliSafe operators if there's a problem, and they will try to contact you first. If they cannot reach you, they will call emergency services.

The interactive plan, which costs $24.99 a month, includes remote system arming and disarming, online access and mobile apps as well as secret alerts. Secret alerts allow you to configure the security system to notify you without sounding the alarm to track when people open medicine cabinets, gun safes, desk drawers containing personal information or liquor cabinets.

If you have any questions about your home alarm system, you can contact SimpliSafe's customer support staff via social media, email or phone. Our experiences were positive, and we found company representatives to be cheerful and informative. SimpliSafe’s customer support hours don’t match the continuous support larger companies offer, but they go beyond typical business hours to make it easy to get help when you need it. This service does not have live chat support. The company also offers detailed tutorials and FAQs on its website, and you can view alarm history reports online.

SimpliSafe sells a variety of security devices you can use to customize your system. The company manufactures all its equipment, so you cannot use third-party security devices and sensors with its system. Every SimpliSafe sensor uses wireless technology, doesn’t require professional installation and is easy to install. This residential security alarm system can even be transferred to a new home very easily when you move. Its selection of equipment includes motion sensors, panic buttons, glass-break sensors and sirens, and the company recently started selling a security camera. SimpliSafe does not offer home automation beyond a simple integration with Nest. The equipment comes with a three-year warranty.
