Netgear specializes in routers and modems for home and business, so it’s no surprise that the Netgear Nighthawk EX7000 is the best Wi-Fi booster for large houses. It features dual-band Wi-Fi with speeds up to 1900 Mbps and a dual-core 1GHz processor for an optimized signal. In tests, it outperformed every Wi-Fi booster in both range and throughput by a significant margin. That said, it’s not the easiest range extender to set up.
Our colleagues at Tom’s Guide thoroughly tested the Nighthawk EX7000 in both office and home settings. The extender range was 165 feet, which was 15 feet farther than the second-best Wi-Fi range extender. This makes the EX7000 an ideal booster for large houses. It’s also great for boosting your Wi-Fi into your backyard.
In the throughput tests, which measures how fast the Wi-Fi booster can move data, the average speed was 413.8 Mbps. This gave it the fastest throughput of the range extenders by more than 50 Mbps. So not only does the Nighthawk cover the most ground – it’s also fast, which is important for a Wi-Fi range extender.
One downside to the Nighthawk EX7000 is the setup, which can be tricky for those without technical aptitude. That said, once you connect it to your wireless network and get the Smart Setup routine running, it’s a smooth process. This walks you through the 2.4 and 5GHz setups and allows you to choose whether you want to use the device as a wired access point or a range extender. In addition, Netgear provides a mobile app for helping you gauge signal strength and channel traffic so that you can customize the settings to get the best possible Wi-Fi.
The design is not as small as many Wi-Fi boosters on the market. It’s big enough to resemble a second router. You can’t really mount it to a wall or plug it directly into a wall plug. You need space on a desk or shelf. Of course, the bigger size enables functionality that smaller Wi-Fi boosters can’t provide. For example, it has five Ethernet ports for connecting wired devices like smart TVs and gaming consoles. It also has three adjustable antennas to give you control over how the boosted Wi-Fi is aimed.
If you live in a big home and your wireless router has trouble reaching certain areas, or if you have dead spots, the Netgear Nighthawk EX7000 is the best Wi-Fi booster available. It’s not discreet like many range extenders, but it covers more ground than other boosters, and does so at higher speeds.
