PROS / The subwoofer has multiple input options to connect to new and old receivers.
CONS / The speaker isn’t as powerful as many others in our review.
VERDICT / The Velodyne Impact is best suited for smaller entertainment rooms. It has enough power to push bass throughout a small room but would be underwhelming in a large room.
The 10-inch Velodyne Impact doesn't reach the sub frequencies like many of the top-rated subwoofers we reviewed. It's not as powerful as many of its top competitors either, but it does provide plenty of volume to send low-end frequencies throughout a small entertainment room.
Our frequency analysis testing determined that the frequency response provided by the manufacturer is accurate. The subwoofer displayed a drop-off in decibels once our test tone ran lower than 40Hz. The same is true for signal above 140Hz. Manufacturers often embellish frequency response statistics, but that is not the case here.
This home subwoofer got underwhelming reviews from our listening panel. During our movie test, the majority of our panel thought that the subwoofer was weak compared to the competition. During a movie action scene, the speaker lacked punch and the bass response often felt loose. This isn't surprising considering the Velodyne is one of the least powerful subwoofers we reviewed. It runs on 150 continuous watts of power, which is half as powerful as the best home subwoofer in our review. The sub still has plenty of power to push low tones throughout a small room. All of our listening panelists were able to feel the bass throughout the floor during our listening testing.
It may take some time to find the sweet spot in your home for this subwoofer. You'll want to experiment moving it around to find the place where it sounds best. This active subwoofer is one of the smallest out of our group. Its small size makes it easy to hide under a coffee or end table to keep it out of the way. This is also one of the lighter subwoofers in our group, weighing only 30 pounds. Other home subwoofers in our review weigh over 50 pounds and can make be difficult to move around.
Located on the back of the subwoofer is the adjustable crossover. The crossover ranges from 50-200 hertz. The crossover is designed to send any frequency above the set amount to other speakers. You can use the crossover to dial in your subwoofer to make it sound the best it possibly can. Also located on the back of the subwoofer are speaker level inputs and outputs. These can be used to connect the subwoofer to an older receiver that does not have a dedicated LFE subwoofer output connection.
The Velodyne Impact 10 is best suited for a smaller entertainment room. It isn't as powerful as some of the best subwoofers in our review, but its small size makes it easy to situate in a corner or under a table. The speaker features an LFE input as well as speaker-level inputs so you can upgrade your home entertainment system even if your receiver is older.
