The best window air conditioners perch in your window and cool part of your home for summer, easily coming out of the window for winter storage. All of the top units in our comparison do that, but the Haier ESAQ406P does it efficiently, quietly and conveniently in a way that stands out from the rest of the group. Its combination of operating modes and other options makes it an obvious frontrunner in this category of products.
An Energy Star certification is one of the first signs of a great window AC, and this one has it. Energy Star products are generally 20 to 30 percent more efficient than what is required by law. This Haier unit has three fan speeds, so you can use the lowest one that is effective for cooling your room. This can offer significant savings over products that are either on full blast or off.
This window air conditioning unit can move 200 cubic feet of air per minute. That will cool a room very quickly and is second only to one other air conditioner in our comparison. It also can remove 1.5 pints of moisture per hour, which will make it feel cooler, faster. The average among products we reviewed was 1.4 so this unit is above average for fighting humidity. The impressive 11.2 energy efficiency rating (EER) means it is designed to use every watt effectively.
Size is important in your choice of window air conditioner. A unit that is too small will struggle to keep the room cool enough. A unit that is too big will cool too quickly, before it can remove humidity from the air, leaving cold and clammy air. For our review we looked specifically at the Haier ESAQ406P, which has 6,050 British thermal units (Btu). It is designed to cool smaller rooms, up to about 250 square feet, but there is another model in the same line that can function well in larger spaces.
The range of operating modes on this unit makes it easy to get the exact environment you want. An automatic mode will adjust the compressor and fan run times and speeds to maintain a temperature that you set. The sleep mode means you can set it to turn all the way off at some point during the night or to increase temperature gradually so you don't wake up too cold. You never have to get up to change settings; they all will be accessible from the LCD remote control.
Some humidity will be removed naturally in the cooling process, but you can speed up moisture removal by using the dehumidify mode. A fan-only mode is great when you just want to get the air circulating without investing in the added energy it takes to cool the air.
Using the timer feature means you can have the air conditioner turn itself on a little before you know you will be coming home so you can walk into a room that is already comfortable and cool. You can also set it to shut off at a certain time so you'll never waste money cooling an empty room.
Design elements really set this unit apart from others. While all window air conditioners in our comparison are relatively effective at cooling, many of them make much more noise than the Haier ESAQ406P while they do it. The other products in our comparison generate at least 50 dB while the Haier is practically silent at 43 dB. That is going to be a surprising difference if you are replacing an older unit. Many of those often produced rattles and other sounds beyond the loud white noise of their fans and compressors. A compressor blanket on this unit cuts down on vibration and noise.
This AC comes with an air filter that will help keep air free of allergens. There is some associated maintenance, though, and Haier makes that convenient with an air filter indicator light. The light comes on after 240 hours of operation. After you clean and replace the filter, the light will go back off for another 240 hours.
Help & Support
Haier backs this air conditioner up with a one-year warranty. A longer warranty on the compressor would be nice, especially since that is offered on some competing products, but one year is decent. Haier responded quickly to our email inquiries, and you can also reach the company by phone and live chat. The website is very informative in general and includes an electronic version of the owner's manual.
Finding an efficient and effective window air conditioner is relatively easy, but the Haier ESAQ406P takes it several steps further. It has high EER, cfm and moisture removal numbers, just like all of the top-rated units, but it also cools quietly. You might even forget it is in the room. There are also enough operating modes to fit just about any set of circumstances, including heavy humidity. This unit is perfect for keeping everyone comfortable on those long summer days.
