Pros / This sound machine has a voice activation feature.
Cons / It doesn’t run on batteries.
Verdict / The Munchkin sound machine is the best sleep machine for home use.
The Munchkin Nursery Projector and Sound System has soothing lullabies that play along with a rotating image projector to help your baby fall asleep. This baby sound machine has accurate nature sounds, and the white noise profile is the best we tested in terms of masking external noises. It doesn’t run on batteries, so you should consider a more portable option, like the WavHello SoundBub, if you want to travel with a baby sound machine. The Munchkin also has a nightlight to help you check on your baby without waking them by turning the light on in your nursery room.
The image projector in this sound machine is adjustable, so you can project one of the three rotating images on a wall or ceiling. The image cartridges stow away in the back panel of the sound machine and are easy to load in the projector. The sound machine and projector work simultaneously or separately and the sleep timer turns them off after 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The timer doesn’t gradually lower the volume, so keep that in mind if you are using this sound machine to mask external noises because the abrupt change is startling.
The sound profiles in this sleep machine are the best we tested. There are four nature sounds: heartbeat, ocean sounds, rain and a white noise profile. We tested the noise masking capabilities of the Munchkin by playing the white noise profile while one of our reviewers ran a vacuum and played music in an adjacent room. This sound machine was the best performer in our sound masking test. The white noise profile is a bit lower in pitch than white noise profiles in other machines we tested, and it significantly hid the sound of the vacuum.
This baby sound machine also has six lullaby songs, including “Twinkle, Twinkle,” “Rock-a-bye Baby” and Brahms’ “Lullaby”. The speaker in this machine is large enough to project a wide range of tones and sounds more natural than all the other machines we tested. The variable knob that controls the volume has ultra-quiet settings and reaches volumes loud enough for large rooms. This is the only sound machine we tested with a voice activation feature. That feature turns the sound machine back on when your baby starts to fuss. You can turn the voice activation feature off if you prefer to let you baby sleep with environmental noises after the timer turns the machine off.
The Munchkin Nursery Projector and Sound System is the best baby sound machine we tested as a permanent nightstand fixture in your nursery room. The projector is a good alternative soothing aid alongside the sound profiles. The only reason to consider a different sound machine for your baby is if portability is important.
