VIPRE is one of the few security programs we reviewed that doesn’t offer multiple tiers of products. Instead, its antivirus, internet security and premium security programs are all offered together. VIPRE Advanced Security does a decent job of recognizing and blocking malware, including both known and newly discovered viruses. It scans emails and attachments, instant messages and USB devices to stop threats from infecting your computer. It also lets you know if you are attempting to access a website known to infect PCs so you don’t click through to the site.
This security software scores above average for internet protection in third-party laboratory tests that measure how well these programs recognize and block malware. VIPRE fluctuates between 96 and 100 percent in detecting both known and unknown threats, including ransomware.
VIPRE does create noticeable slowdown while running. It took a little while for some webpages to fully load, email attachments to upload, and messages to be sent during testing. We also noticed a bit of drag while playing online games. It wasn’t as bad when we played slower games, such as Solitaire, but faster-paced games were affected at times. Other testing labs vary with how often there is some slowdown on their test computers, with some showing no lag and others measuring a little slowdown.
In addition to blocking viruses, ransomware, spyware, Trojans, bots and rootkits, VIPRE Advanced Security includes a firewall that works alongside the one included with your operating system. This means if your Windows firewall misses something, VIPRE can catch it before it attacks your computer. It also has spam filtering and anti-phishing tools to cut down on schemes designed to steal your identity.
One of VIPRE's best tools is Social Watch. This function scans all information that attempts to sneak in through social media sites. This is important because it is easier for viruses and other threats to piggyback on news stories, links, images, games and videos shared through social media.
VIPRE doesn’t have parental controls, but you can block websites by setting the security levels in the privacy settings, much like the security settings on your internet browser. It also doesn’t have a password manager or safe banking tools that are typically included with the best internet security software.
Another drawback of VIPRE is that it doesn’t have mobile protection of any kind, so you will have to invest in a separate mobile protection program for your cellphones and tablets. If you would prefer an internet security program that is also compatible with mobile devices, consider McAfee LiveSafe.

VIPRE offers 24/7 live tech support via telephone. Plus, you can access other support tools, such as the FAQs and user community, through the support portal on the VIPRE website. You can also access chat support through the user portal.
The best tool of this internet security program is Social Watch, which stops new threats from sneaking in through social media networks. VIPRE is very effective at noticing new malware and blocks threats before they can attack your computer. It does create some slowdown on your system, and doesn’t include more advanced protection tools such as password managers or parental controls, but overall is a functional program for protecting your Windows computers.
