The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn is a wireless laser printer that performs well. It is a single-function machine, so it doesn’t scan, fax and copy like the HP LaserJet MFP-M477fdw or the Xerox WorkCentre, but it’s fast and prints good-quality documents. It is a good choice for an office that prints a lot of pages, and it has a low per-page printing cost.

The M553dn’s overall design is nothing extraordinary. It is large, weighing approximately 60 pounds and measuring 18 inches wide by 15.7 inches tall. It has a 2.2-inch color display for navigating through settings and features. Unfortunately, it isn’t a touchscreen, so you must press buttons to access and adjust settings.

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn’s print quality matches that of the best wireless laser printers we reviewed. During our black-and-white, text-heavy print tests, we found very few errors in the documents. When we printed our color documents from Excel and PowerPoint, we found a handful of color errors such as poor color transitions, color shifting in lines set against a background gradient and gradient stepping. However, this HP’s printing speeds are some of the fastest in our review. During our tests, it printed both black-and-white and color documents at an average rate of 19 pages per minute.

This wireless laser printer also stands out because of its low operating costs. The cost of printing a single page is approximately $0.15, though that drops to $0.11 when you buy a high-capacity toner cartridge. The M553dn produces the most budget-friendly color prints of any printer we reviewed.

This HP printer is compatible with Apple AirPrint and Mopria mobile printing apps, so you can print wirelessly from your smartphone or tablet. Additionally, it has near-field communication (NFC), so you can wirelessly pair the printer with any NFC-capable device just by tapping them together. This machine is also equipped with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi networking.

HP provides good customer support. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact a representative by email, telephone or live chat. In addition, you access an online manual and troubleshooting guide on the company’s website, where you will also find FAQs pages and forums.

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn performed very well in our testing. It is fast and produces high-quality documents. Its design doesn’t make it stand out from the crowd, and it’s only compatible with a couple mobile printing applications. Still, it is an excellent option for an office that prints documents in high volumes.
