Lenovo ThinkPad Twist Multitouch Ultrabook Review

Author by

PROS / The Twist has one of the fastest processors available and a large amount of RAM, so you can multitask, download and stream quickly. It also features an Ethernet port for use when Wi-Fi is unavailable.

CONS / The resolution is only 1366 x 768, and the battery life is only about six hours, which is less than most other tablet PCs.

VERDICT / A quick processor and a lot of storage make this computer fast, but the resolution and battery leave something to be desired.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Twist convertible is one of the best tablet PC devices because it's a laptop, tablet and much more. This computer has a swivel screen that allows you to change the mode depending on your situation. If you work outside an office, you'll quickly see why the Twist, with its portability, fast processor, bright graphics and large amount of storage, has earned the Top Ten Reviews Silver Award.

Performance

This Lenovo ThinkPad features a 1.8GHz 4th gen Intel Core i3 processor. Combine that with its 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive, and you have one fast, multitasking machine. If you need more power and more storage, there's another model option with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. There are a few differences between the hard drive and solid-state drive, but one is not ultimately better than the other. A solid-state drive doesn’t have moving parts like your average hard drive, so it's a quieter, more shock-resistant drive, and it does generally make your computer run faster.

Windows 8 comes loaded on the Twist, as well as Microsoft Office. The battery can last up to six, sometimes seven hours, but an even longer battery life would be nice seeing as a few other tablet PC's have battery lives of up to 10 hours. The Intel HD Graphics 4000 chip makes the display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels bright and clear. The 12.5-inch screen is nice and large, but slightly too large when in tablet mode, which doesn't make this the best tablet. At 8.66 x 12.99 inches and weighing almost 3.5 pounds, the Twist is comfortable to hold and use in any of the other three modes. That said, if you are in tablet mode because a client is signing documents, it's nice to have a larger display with a whole page of text showing.

Features

Lenovo has created a swivel screen so this computer can be used in multiple modes: laptop, tablet, stand and tent. In laptop mode, the device works as a touchscreen laptop would. You can type on the keyboard, work on just the screen, or alternate doing both. The touchscreen is responsive and the processor is speedy, making switching from app to app quick. The keyboard seems small at first, but it's comfortable to type on for extended periods of time. If you need to, for example, have a medical form signed while sitting by a patient's bedside, you can switch to tablet mode and hand them a stylus. This saves time that would have been spent looking for somewhere to set the laptop, or printing documents and scanning them.

Switching to tent or stand mode hides the keyboard, allowing you the have the screen closer. This can be convenient when flying on business trips if you want to watch a movie, or just to use the touchscreen to get work done.

Though the laptop feels durable and the Corning Gorilla Glass is very resilient, we felt the display was wobbly. When in laptop or stand mode, you can press on the screen and the display bounces a little bit. It's not so bad that you'll fear breaking it, but it is a bit unnerving.

The webcam is 720p, which is fine for conference calls. Lenovo didn't include a rear-facing camera because with a swiveling screen, you don't need a camera on both sides. This computer features a SIM card slot, SD card slot, mini HDMI port and two 3.0 USB ports along with a combo microphone/audio jack. There is also an Ethernet port on the side, and the option to connect using Bluetooth. Purchasing apps is a simple process with the Windows store. There are thousands to choose from that are perfect for business use and just for fun.

Lenovo built this device on the Intel Small Business Advantage platform, which includes security features for small to medium-sized businesses. These features include after-hours maintenance, software monitoring, a Kensington Lock slot and a TPM Security Chip that, in a nutshell, encrypts your information and safely secures it.

Help & Support

Lenovo generally provides helpful customer service. There are several contact options, including phone and email support, live chat, user forums and FAQs. There are also many repair centers across the country in case your issue can't be solved over the phone.

Summary

The Lenovo ThinkPad Twist is a great solution for small and medium businesses. With its security features and full Microsoft Office suite, you'll know your materials are confident and safe. All of those elements combined with a fast processor make this a great machine for multitasking and many other business purposes.
