The Canon Pixma iP4700 is a single-function printer that’s ideal for consumers and small business owners looking for a quality inkjet printer that won’t break the bank. Reasonably priced with stellar color print resolution, the Pixma iP4700 is an inkjet photo printer than can print both documents and images with clarity.
The hallmark of this inkjet printer is its excellent color print resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi, as all Canon Pixma models have. Such high resolution yields color documents and photographs that are noticeably sharper than the competition. In comparison, the printer’s black and white resolution is relatively low at 600 x 600 dpi. However, this resolution is hardly detrimental because it’s suitable for black and white documents and quality loss isn’t noticeable.
The inkjet printer also has one of the lower monthly duty cycles we came across, at 2,500 pages, and relatively slow printing speeds of 9.2 pages per minute (ppm) for black and white and 8.1 ppm for color pages. However, considering the device is first and foremost a photo printer and produces high-quality color documents, this is to be expected.
Compared to the higher-ranking inkjet printers in our lineup, the Canon Pixma iP4700 is limited in features. Most obvious is the printer’s limited connectivity; the device cannot print wirelessly and does not have a memory card slot. This means in order to print, it must be connected directly to a computer or an external device using the printer’s USB port. The printer also has a PictBridge port that allows you to print directly from digital cameras but your camera must be PictBridge-compatible in order to use this feature.
Not all is disappointing, however, when it comes to the printer’s features. The Canon Pixma iP4700 is ENERGY STAR qualified, meaning it meets stringent energy-efficiency standards. In fact, the inkjet printer only uses a mere 17 watts. This is significantly less energy than laser printers and even some inkjet printers use, which translates into money savings.
The Canon Pixma iP4700 has a utilitarian design that lacks the sleekness and polish of its sister products. However, the printer’s conventional design coupled with its light weight of only 12 pounds makes it universally appealing to a wide range of users.
While a one-year warranty seems to be the standard when it comes to inkjet printers, we were still disappointed to find the Canon Pixma iP4700 doesn’t come with a longer or more substantial warranty. That said, the help and support options that come supplementary with the printer are anything but disappointing. Canon provides extensive direct help options that allow you to contact a customer service representative via email and toll-free telephone. We sent an email with a question regarding this specific inkjet printer and we received an answer from Canon within just 30 minutes.
On the Canon website there’s also an abundance of helpful resources, including FAQs, an extensive knowledgebase and product registration.
The Canon Pixma iP4700 may not have the fastest printing speeds, highest black and white resolution or flexible connectivity options. However, its unrivaled color print resolution means it produces crisp, high-quality documents and images every time it prints. Plus, a lightweight design makes this printer appealing to both photo enthusiasts and home users with space limitations.
