Pros / Its affordable toner cartridges have high page yields, which makes it the most cost-effective color laser printer in our review on a per-page basis.

Cons / The printer doesn’t have a touchscreen, which makes navigating settings a little clunky.

Verdict / The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn is an excellent choice for high-volume printing because of its good print quality and fast speeds. It also has decent support for mobile printing and the lowest per-page cost of any color laser printer in our review.

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn is a color laser printer designed for the office and built with high-volume printing in mind. It boasts large-capacity paper trays, an impressive 80,000-page duty cycle and the lowest per-page cost of printing for a color printer in our review. The Color LaserJet M553dn also keeps it simple – its design focuses on printing only, without the added complexity of a scanner or fax.

The printer’s 2.2-inch color LCD display is markedly smaller than those on other printers. In addition, the lack of touch support means you have to punch buttons to adjust settings or cycle through function menus.

The quality of the documents it printed in our tests was on par with the best color laser printers we reviewed. There were very few errors in the text-heavy test documents, though there were some problems with color in other tests – in our Excel test, lines set against a background gradient had some unwanted color shifting, and there was some gradient stepping, obvious color transitions that should be smooth and unnoticeable, in our PowerPoint test. The machine printed both monochrome and color pages at a rate of 19 pages per minute, which is better than average. As a single-function printer, the HP Color LaserJet has no scan and copy capability.

Another area in which this printer excels is operating costs – it produces the most affordable color prints in our review. When you use standard-capacity cartridges, the cost breaks down to 15 cents per page. High-capacity cartridges drop the price of toner to 11 cents per page, making it the most economical option of any color laser printer.

With a primary paper tray that holds up to 100 pages and a secondary tray with a 550-page capacity, this is one of the largest-capacity dual-tray laser printers available.

The printer is equipped with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi for networking, but without a host USB port, you can’t standalone print from external storage. That said, the machine supports Apple AirPrint, so it should play nicely with your Apple smartphone and tablet, and near-field communication (NFC) lets you wirelessly pair any NFC-equipped device with just a tap. If you want to do more than simply print from your phone, you can use the HP ePrint app to print directly from other apps, social media services and cloud storage.

HP covers the Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn with a standard one-year warranty and offers one-on-one support through email, phone and live chat on its website. Online support material is plentiful, with user manuals, troubleshooting guides, FAQs and customer support forums.
