Brother MFC-L2740DW Review

Author by

PROS / Since it only uses one toner cartridge, it has an affordable per-page printing cost.

CONS / Other black-and-white laser printers in our review have better print quality.

VERDICT / The MFC-L2740DW is an all-in-one wireless laser printer with low-cost toner and a compact design. As long as you only need to print in black and white and pristine print quality isn’t your primary concern, this could be a good addition to your home office.

The Brother MFC-L2740DW is a monochrome wireless laser printer. It has a compact, multifunction design that makes it a good choice for a home office. Still, the machine’s performance is basic, and it doesn’t necessarily stand out from the crowd.

In addition to printing, the Brother MFC-L2740DW copies, scans and faxes. It is compact for a multifunction printer, measuring only 16.1 x 15.7 x 12.5 inches, which makes it a good option for a small home office. You use the machine’s 2.7-inch color touchscreen display to navigate through settings.

This printer only prints in black and white. During our tests, we found that it produces adequate, though not perfect, documents. There were 22 printing errors, including a few small spots of unwanted ink, on the text-heavy, 10-page test document we printed with the MFC-L2740DW. In addition, the images we printed had heavy banding and unwanted shadowy spots instead of a steady shade gradation. The Brother MFC-L2740DW’s printing speed is quite good. During our tests, it printed at an average rate of 18 pages per minute.

Because it is a monochrome laser printer and only uses one toner cartridge, this machine has low operating costs. The standard-size toner cartridge it uses costs $44.99 and can print about 1,200 pages, which works out to an approximate per-page printing cost of $0.04. This is in line with most of the black-and-white printers in our review and understandably much cheaper than the per-page cost of a color laser printer.

This printer holds approximately 250 sheets of standard paper in its single tray, which is average. The automatic document feeder used for scanning, copying and faxing hold 35 pages at a time, and the printer has auto duplexing, so you don’t have to manually flip pages over to print on the back side of two-sided documents.

The Brother MFC-L2740DW is compatible with Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print mobile printing apps. You can also use the Brother iPrint&Scan app to send documents from your smartphone or tablet directly to the printer. You cannot print from USB storage, and this device does not have NFC capabilities, so you can’t simply tap your phone to the printer to connect them.

Brother covers this printer with a one-year warranty. If you have questions about the product, you can contact representatives by email, telephone or live chat on the company’s website. You can also read the user manual online as well as download and access additional support materials.

The Brother MFC-L2740DW is a multifunction wireless laser printer with good wireless connectivity options and decent, though not pristine, print quality. It is affordable and compact enough to use in a small home office.
